Tiara

Tiara

The tiara is a high miter with three crowns of Byzantine and Persian origin that represents the symbol of the papacy. It consists of a conical or semiovoid birette surrounded by three crowns and from which hang two ribbons similar to those of the miter. Since the second half of the twentieth century and during the twenty-first century, the crowning formula with the tiara has declined and it appears only symbolically, in heraldic representations, and so on. In antiquity, archaeologists consider a tiara the cap or crown high, in conoid form or of trunk of cone, usually in cloth or leather, that symbolized the royalty and carried the gods or the kings deified in the Ancient Near East by the Egyptians , Sumerians, Akkadians, Assyrians, Hittites, Persians, etc. The Egyptian pharaohs used the white tiara to symbolize their power over the Lower Egypt. The Akkadians complemented her with horns, a symbol of divinity.
