Tisanuros are one of the most primitive orders of the insects, and are known by the name of silver fish, although this name more refers to a family of this order, to the Lepismatidae. It includes 335 species worldwide divided into four families: Lepismatidae, Lepidotrichidae, Maindroniidae and Nicoletiidae. Formerly they were classified as Apterygota, along with Collembola, Protura, Diplura and Microcoryphia, for lacking wings. Since this feature is a simpleiomorphism, there is no justification for keeping Apterygota as a taxon.
