Meaning of "virelai" in the Spanish dictionary

A virelay is a medieval poetic form, often music. It is one of the three cool forms, and was one of the most common metrics in Europe from the second half of the thirteenth century until the end of the fifteenth century. The word 'virelay' comes from the Frenchman virer + lai. A virelay is a musical form similar to a rondo, and also similar to the hispanoandalusí zéjel. It consists of a more or less extensive chorus alternating with several verses divided into two sections: the first section is subdivided into two halves, called moves, with the same metrical structure that are sung with the same melody, sometimes varying End to end with two different cadences, called "open end" and "closed end". The second section of each verse, called lap, repeats the metrical structure of the chorus and is sung with the same melody, thus serving as a musical link. The stanzas thus have AAB form, called "bar form". Each stanza has two rhymes, and the final rhyme is recovered as the opening rhyme of the next stanza. Un virelay es una forma musical similar a un rondó, y también semejante al zéjel hispanoandalusí. Consta de un estribillo más o menos extenso que alterna con varias estrofas divididas en dos secciones: la primera sección se subdivide a su vez en dos mitades, llamadas mudanzas, con la misma estructura métrica que se cantan con la misma melodía, variando a veces el final para terminar con dos cadencias distintas, llamadas «final abierto» y «final cerrado». La segunda sección de cada estrofa, llamada vuelta, repite la estructura métrica del estribillo y se canta con la misma melodía, sirviendo así de engarce musical. Las estrofas tienen, pues, forma AAB, llamada «forma bar». Cada estrofa tiene dos rimas, y la rima final se recupera como rima inicial de la estrofa siguiente.
