Meaning of "focal" in the French dictionary

The focal distance of an optical system is the measure of its power of convergence or divergence of light. A system with a shorter focal length has more optical power than another with a longer focal length. The focal distances, respectively object and image, of a convergent or divergent centered optical system are, by definition, the algebraic distances separating respectively the object main plane H from the object focus F and the main image plane H 'of the image focus F'. They are often denoted respectively ƒ and ƒ '. In the case of a "thin" system, for example a thin lens, the principal planes may be confused with the optical center of the lens and in this case the image focal length is easily defined by the algebraic distance separating the optical center of the thin lens of the focus image. In all cases, focal distances are part of the cardinal elements of a system, that is to say a set of quantities which allow a complete definition of the system and an easy digitization of the calculation, in particular in matrix optics. La distance focale d'un système optique est la mesure de sa puissance de convergence ou divergence de la lumière. Un système avec une longueur de focale plus courte a plus de puissance optique qu'un autre avec une focale plus longue. Les distances focales, respectivement objet et image, d'un système optique centré convergent ou divergent sont, par définition, les distances algébriques séparant respectivement le plan principal objet H du foyer objet F et le plan principal image H′ du foyer image F′. Elles sont souvent notées respectivement ƒ et ƒ′. Dans le cas d'un système « mince », par exemple une lentille mince, les plans principaux peuvent être confondus avec le centre optique de la lentille et dans ce cas la distance focale image est facilement définie par la distance algébrique séparant le centre optique de la lentille mince du foyer image. Dans tous les cas les distances focales font partie des éléments cardinaux d'un système, c'est-à-dire d'un ensemble de grandeurs qui permettent une définition complète du système et une numérisation facile du calcul, notamment en optique matricielle.
