Guttural Consonant

Consonne gutturale

In articulatory phonetics, a guttural consonant is a consonant whose point of articulation is in the throat or the back-mouth. The extension of this term is ill-defined, so that it tends to fall into disuse in favor of more precise names. It is sometimes used as a generic term in phonology to conveniently designate a group of posterior consonants when it is useful to discuss properties that they have in common within a language. Gutturales have historically been described as: ▪ the ridges: articulated with the posterior part of the tongue, against the hard palate, the veil of the palate or the uvula ▪ the radicals: articulated with the root of the tongue against the pharynx or the epiglottis ▪ Glottales: articulated at the level of the glottis.
