The oblate is, according to its initial form, the manuscript diacritic sign ÷, sometimes only made up of a horizontal line - equivalent to typographic dashes. In modern typography, an obelis is also called a typographical symbol in the form of a cross, † or ‡, whose function and mode of use may differ from the ancient ones. L'obèle est, selon sa forme initiale, le signe diacritique manuscrit ÷, parfois uniquement constitué d'un trait horizontal —, équivalent des tirets cadratins typographiques. En typographie moderne, on appelle aussi obèle un symbole typographique en forme de croix, † ou ‡, dont la fonction et le mode d'utilisation peuvent différer des obèles anciens.
