Scolia

Scolie

The school is a short lyrical poem normally consisting of a strophe to be sung after dinner during the symposium. For the ancients, the inventor of this Greek literary genre would be Terpander and it would have developed first among Lesbians. Among the famous authors are poets such as Alcea, Sappho, Praxilla, Timocreon, Simonides or Pindar. The latter, however, is known to have given a more artistic scope to the genre, developing it by adding several strophes, in agreement with the Dorian poetics. It was especially in Attica, in Athens, that the genus developed and was practiced. Until the end of the Peloponnesian War, it was an obligatory passage at the end of the banquets: after singing a pean in chorus, a lyre and a branch of myrtle were passed. The guest who held the symbolic objects had to sing famous passages of poets and then pass the objects to another one of his choice, which linked, and so on, respecting the theme chosen according to the atmosphere of the symposium.
