Sphagnum

Sphaigne

Sphagnum is a kind of bryophyte moss, the only one of the Sphagnaceae family. Sphagnum magellanicum The genus sphagnum contains from 1510 to 3500 species in the world, which form peatlands covering about 1% of the land area. Sphagnaceae and Ambuchananiaceae are considered the only two families of the order Sphagnales by some authors. For others, the Sphagnaceae are the only family of the order, the Ambuchananiaceae being placed in the order of Ambuchananiales. Some species of sphagnum moths tolerate flooding, large variations in temperature and pH. Several species of sphagnum moss are usually found in the same bog. In good conditions, over the centuries or millennia, peat can form without interruption and accumulate on several meters or even exceptionally tens of meters in tropical zone.
