Tabu is a word found in all Polynesian languages in the form tapu, kapu ... It was popularized in Europe by James Cook when he returned from his first circumnavigation during which he stayed in Tahiti. In ethnological literature, it refers to a prohibition of a sacred character whose transgression is likely to lead to a supernatural punishment. In Tahitian among others, the opposite of taboo is noa, which is commonplace, accessible to all. By extension, the term taboo refers, in its most general sense, to a subject which it is preferable not to mention if one wishes to respect the codes of propriety of a given society.
