Arbitrariness

Arbitrarietà

In linguistics arbitrariness is one of the characteristics of the linguistic sign. We speak of arbitrariness as the elements of the linguistic sign are not naturally "motivated" but depend on a convention between speakers of a language. Arbitrarity is so much about expression and content. In this sense, therefore, the generic meaning of the term "arbitrary", as synonymous with unmotivated, conventional, opaque, refers to language as its essential characteristic. The arbitrariness defined here can be understood as "absolute" since De Saussure himself introduces the notion of relative arbitrariness in the sense that there are linguistic structures that have some relative motivation that is highlighted in certain terms composed of well-identified elements such as such as headgear, keychain etc.
