생물의 개체발생을 연구하는 생물학의 한 분과이다. 현미경의 발달로 동물의 발생과정에서 일어나는 형태적 변화에 대한 연구가 상세히 진행되었으며 실험발생학의 발달로 초기발생에 있어서의 분화기구에 대한 많은 사실들이 밝혀졌다. 현재는 분자생물학의 발달과 함께 발생과정 중 배아의 증식 ·분화 ·조절기구 등을 연구하는 데 물리 ·화학적 방법에 의존하게 되어 발생생물학이라는 새 분야로 발전하게 되었다.
