Somit

Somthis - segmental vertebrate mesoderm of vertebrate embryos, developing in the process of somitogenesis symmetrically on both sides of the neural tube and the striatum. The somites are transformed into dermatoms, myotics and sclerotomies. Each somit consists of a wall formed by a layer of bottle-shaped epithelial cells surrounding a mesenchymal stem formed by somitocell cells. The somites are formed in the cranial-tail direction, budding from the pre-mesoderm. The first somite is just behind the eyepiece, the last in the tail of the embryo. The concept of somite introduced into the embryology Francis Maitland Balfour in 1881, replacing the term "protovertebra" by Robert Remak. The construction of somites in the bird was first introduced by Leonard W. Williams in 1910. Sometimes the term somity is defined by metamers.
