Hatteria

Hatteria, tuatara, shawl - a genus of the hatterian family that is endemic in New Zealand. Although it looks most like a lizard, it actually represents a separate evolutionary line of the lepidosaurs - the spiders. Two species of hatteria are the only contemporary representatives of this group. Their closest relatives are ossified. For this reason, hatterias are attracted by scientists who study the evolution of lizards and snakes and reconstruct the appearance and habits of the earliest diapsides. The hatteria has a greenish-brown coloration and grows to about 60 cm from the head to the tip of the tail. A spiky comb, especially visible in males, runs through the spine. Teeth, in which two rows of jaws in one jaw, is unique among modern animals. Another unusual feature is the presence of a distinct parietal eye whose function is the subject of ongoing research. In spite of the lack of ear lobes, the hatteries are able to hear. Their skeleton has many unique features, some of which represent an evolutionary remnant of fish.
