Chordata

Cordados

Chordates constitute a phylum within the Animalia kingdom which includes vertebrates, amphioxes and tunicates. These animals are characterized by the presence of bilateral symmetry, notochord, complete digestive system, a dorsal nerve tube, gill slits, and a post anal tail in at least one stage of their life. Chordates share characteristics with many invertebrate animals without notochord, regarding the structural plane, such as bilateral symmetry, anteroposterior axis, metamerism and cephalization. The group includes animals adapted for life in water, land and air. The chordates, together with two other phyla, the Hemichordata and the Echinodermata, form the group of deuterostomes, linked by different peculiar embryonic aspects, in the form of their larvae, by the development of the embryonic openings and the peritoneal cavity or peritoneum. Internally the chordates are divided into three subfiles: Urochordata, Cephalochordata and Vertebrata, mainly based on the notochord characteristics. In urocordados, the larval stage has notochord and neural tube, both disappearing in the adult stage.
