Australopithecus

Australopithecus

Species A. afarensis A. africanus A. anamensis A. garhi A. sediba Australopithecines are a genus of several extinct hominids, very close to those of the genus Homo and among them A. afarensis and A. africanus are the most famous . A. africanus, first described by Raymond Dart, based on Taung's infant skull, dating from 2.5 to 2.9 million years, was long considered the direct ancestor of the genus Homo. Recent discoveries of other hominid fossils, older than A. africanus and yet seeming to belong to the genus Homo, cast doubt on this theory: either the genus Homo separated from Australopithecus earlier than previously thought, or both developed independently from another common ancestor, as yet unknown. Australopithecines appear to have appeared about 3.9 million years ago.
