The Chibchas or Muscas were a chibcha-speaking tribe of the central plateau of Colombia that formed the Muísca Confederation. They were found by the Spanish Empire in 1537, at the time of the conquest. The muscas were divided in two confederations: the Hunza of the north zone, whose sovereign was the zaque, and the Bacatá of the south zone, whose sovereign was the zipa. Both confederations were located in the highlands of the present departments of Cundimarca and Boyacá in the central region of Colombia. The territory of the muscas extended by an area of 46 972 square kilometers from the north of Boyacá to the Paramo of Sumapaz and the peaks of the Eastern Cordillera for the Valley of Magdalena. It bordered the territories of the pijaos and the panches. At the time of the Spanish conquest, the area had a large population, but the exact number of inhabitants is not known. The languages of the muscas were dialects of the Chibcha language, also called muysca and fly, that belong to the chibchana linguistic family. The economy was based on agriculture, metallurgy, and manufacturing.
