Coloboma

Coloboma

Coloboma, also called cat's eye syndrome, is a congenital, hereditary malformation in the form of an isolated ocular defect, or produced by the action of drugs or infectious agents, and can reach one of the structures of one or both eyes, such as iris, choroid, eyelid, retina and optic nerve. The pathology affects one to two people in ten thousand. Coloboma results from deficient closure of the embryonic fissure in the intrauterine phase during the first or second month of gestation. Depending on its location and extent, damage to the vision may be severe, or not. When it is confined to the iris, there is no problem, unlike what occurs when the malformation reaches the optic nerve and the retina. A unilateral cleft of an upper eyelid is the most common type of eyelid coloboma.
