cortesão

Courtier

Cortesão

The courtier is a person who is often present in the noble court of a king or other royal personage. In general, it is the man who makes a court. He can perform a variety of functions, from entertaining the king with music, conversations, factions, games and dances, to holding diplomatic posts, giving advice and assisting in the formation of the prince. The woman who has such functions is a palatial lady, due to the pejorative sense added to the idea of a courtesan. Although it has existed for a long time, the image of the courtier - and its various ideal characteristics - was built intensely from the Renaissance. This is because it was during this period that Baldassare Castiglione wrote "O Cortesão" where the discussions in the court of Urbino about the perfect courtier are told.
