Franquisque

Franquisque

The franquisque or francisca is a war ax that was used during the early years of the Middle Ages by the Frankish gérmanicos. This weapon became characteristic of this people, especially during the years of 500 to 750 AD. Although it was more commonly associated with the Franks, because of its notable use during the reign of Charlemagne, it was also used by other Germanic peoples, including the Anglo -saxions. The first reference to the term franquisque appears in the book "Ethymologiarum sive originum, libri XVIII", of Saint Isidore of Seville, as the name used among the Spaniards to refer to these weapons, probably because they were used by peoples beyond the Pyrenees. The franquisque is characterized by its characteristic arched head which extends up to the blade and ends with a prominent point in the upper and lower corners. The shape of the top of the head is usually an "S" or convex and the lower part curved downward, forming an elbow with the wooden handle. Being small and light, it was an excellent launching weapon that weakened the enemy's defenses.
