Hipparchus, in Greek: Ίππαρχος, Hipparkhos, was a Greco-Ottoman astronomer, machine builder, an accomplished cartographer and mathematician of the Alexandria school, born in 190 BC in Nicaea, Bithynia, now Iznik, in present-day Turkey. He lived in Alexandria, being one of the great representatives of the Alexandrine School, from the point of view of the contribution to the mechanics. He worked mainly in Rhodes. Today he is considered the founder of scientific astronomy and also called the father of trigonometry for being the pioneer in the elaboration of a trigonometric table, with values ​​of a series of angles, using the pioneering idea of ​​Hipsicles, inherited from the Babylonians, of the division of the circle in 360 equal parts and division of the degree in sixty minutes of sixty seconds. He lived at a time later than the Golden Age of the mathematical production of that University, reached with Euclid, Apollonius, Eratosthenes and Archimedes and that, from there, declined, but was a great astronomer undoubtedly and died in Rhodes. In addition to producing something innovative like the string table, he invented a method for solving spherical triangles. Viveu em Alexandria, sendo um dos grandes representantes da Escola Alexandrina, do ponto de vista da contribuição para a mecânica. Trabalhou sobretudo em Rodes. Hoje é considerado o fundador da astronomia científica e também chamado de pai da trigonometria por ter sido o pioneiro na elaboração de uma tabela trigonométrica, com valores de uma série de ângulos, utilizando a idéia pioneira de Hipsicles, herdada dos babilônios, da divisão do círculo em 360 partes iguais e a divisão do grau em sessenta minutos de sessenta segundos.
