Meaning of "nonas" in the Portuguese dictionary

Nonas were one of the three fixed dates of each month in the Roman calendar - the others were the Calendas and Idos, the main references. While the Calends day was a fixed date, always the first day of the month, the Idos and Nonas were moving dates, related to the number of days of the months of the oldest Roman calendars with 10 months, some, 4 majors, with 31 days - March, May, July and October - and the other 6 children - April, June, August, September, November and December - with 30 days. In the months of 31 days, the Idos were on the 15th of the month, in the smaller months, the Idos were on the 13th of the month. The history of the Roman calendar reveals several stages, going from a 10-month calendar, mainly based on the lunar months, for 12 months, in which the lunar months were approached with the annual cycle of the sun, adding January and February, between other changes until the reform of the Julian calendar. As the origin of its name indicates, Nonas designated the ninth day before the Idos. Nos meses de 31 dias, os Idos eram no dia 15 do mês, nos meses mais pequenos, os Idos eram no dia 13 do mês. A história do Calendário romano revela várias etapas, passando de um calendário de 10 meses, tendo por base sobretudo os meses lunares, para 12 meses, em que se procurava aproximar os meses lunares com o ciclo anual do sol, acrescentando Janeiro e Fevereiro, entre outras alterações até à reforma do Calendário Juliano. Como a origem do seu nome indica, Nonas designavam o nono dia antes dos Idos.
