Osteoma

Osteoma

An osteoma is a new piece of bone that usually grows over another piece of bone, typically in the skull. It is a slow growing benign tumor. When the bone tumor grows on another bone it is known as "homoplastic osteoma"; when it grows on another tissue it is called "heteroplastic osteoma". Osteoma represents the most common benign neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The cause of osteomas is uncertain, but generally accepted theories suggest infectious, embryological, or traumatic causes. Larger craniofacial osteomas can cause facial pain, headache and infection due to obstruction of the nasal passages. Often craniofacial osteoma presents through ocular signs and symptoms. Multiple osteomas are associated with colonic polyps in Gardner's syndrome.
