Smithsonite

Smithsonita

The smithsonite, or smithsonite is one of the main ores of zinc present on Earth. It is a zinc carbonate that was named after the researcher James Smithson. Smithsonite is an ore with a relatively high level of zinc, but it is in shortage. Generally, smithsonite also presents traces of manganese, magnesium, tin and other metals associated in its mineral structure, varying its color from blue, green, orange and pink. Despite the large amount of zinc present in smithsonite, it is not feasible to extract this metal through the ore, since to achieve the purity desired by the extractive standards of smithsonite, a complex oxidation method is required to raise the temperature and separate the zinc impurities and other metals.
