Tagma

Tagma

In invertebrate anatomy, a tagma is a group of specialized segments of arthropods, such as the head of an insect. The body of arthropods is divided into many segments, also known as somites or methamers, which are primarily similar. These segments are grouped into specialized divisions called tagmas. Segments of a tagma may be completely fused or not. The divisions of tagmas vary according to the group. For example, Hexapoda are divided into three tagmas, head, thorax and abdomen. Already the Chelicerata are divided into two tagmas, prossoma and opistossoma. The evolutionary process of merging the segments that gives rise to tagmas is called tagmose.
