Voivode

Voivoda

Voivoda, is a Slavic word that originally designated the chief commander of a military force. The word gradually came to refer to the governor of a province; the territory governed or administered by a voivode is known by voivodeship. The Polish title is sometimes translated into Portuguese as "palatine" or palatine conde, in relation to a palatinate. In Slavic terminology, the nobility title of a voivode is in some cases considered equal to that of a German duke. The title was used in medieval Bohemia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Moldavia, Wallachia and Transylvania. Later, voivoda was the highest military post in the principalities of Montenegro and Serbia, in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and among the Chetniks Serbs. Wojewoda is the term for the governor of a Polish province, a voivodeship. In the Romanian medieval principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, voievoda became part of an official titration of the sovereign prince, showing his right to lead the whole army.
