Future West Coast plans

Kia ora Mike, hope you're doing well. I just wanted to touch base quickly to see whether you've got any further plans for West Coast-related events this year? I'm sure you're aware of the WPNZ National parks collaboration, and I was wondering whether there would be an opportunity to align the two projects by focusing on West Coast national parks at the same time as your event is going on. This worked well with Kahurangi National Park earlier in the year and could help prevent duplication of resources - no stress though if you haven't got anything planned, we can just try and improve those articles independently! Uncertain genera placement

Kia ora Mike, do you know much about moving genera in GBIF and other databases? I've just made an article on the genus Alloecentrella, which based on papers from 2007/2008 should be in the family Helicophidae. This isn't recognised in many major databases (GBIF, iNaturalist, NCBI, ITIS), but is on others (IRMNG, NZOR, Manaaki Whenua). Do you have any experience in making changes like this (and if it's appropriate to change genera structure in Wikidata if it's different on GBIF)? --Prosperosity (talk) 03:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Death of Tuheitia

Kia ora! I just wanted to leave a message. I’m concerned that the page I started for the Death and tangi of Tuheitia will be deleted. The reasoning is that the page does not include enough detail and could be simply merged. I haven’t finished writing the page - it still needs a lot of work regarding the tangi - but deleting it I think would be a very poor idea. The events of the King’s death and tangi were of major national significance, being the first Māori monarch’s tangi to be nationally televised, and that it reached a wide audience within New Zealand. I also am concerned that articles on events significant to Māori, like this one, will get deleted, and what that means for Māori engagement with Wikipedia (which is low). I've added my suggestion on the Talk page. Bear in mind nobody's talking about deleting information; pages are merged and split all the time, it's all about what works best for presenting information clearly for the average international reader (the person we're doing all this work for, after all). Worst case, the content in Death of Tūheitia will be merged back into Tuheitia, then, when you've continued to expand it, split out again. Which is a wee bit of extra work but not a big deal in the long run. Note that many editors from other countries have their own concerns and increasing the visibility of Māori in Wikipedia is a long way down that list, so appealing to the importance of representation or increasing Māori engagement won't be very effective in changing their minds. It's best to stick to arguments from Wikipedia policy that everybody agrees on: notability criteria as set out in Wikipedia:Notability (events), the guidelines for when topics are split off into stand-alone pages WP:PAGEDECIDE, and so forth. Also it can be a good idea to start by expanding a section in an already-existing article, then, when that content is so voluminous that it overshadows the rest of the article, post a Talk page message suggesting it be split off—at least until someone else improves the other sections to match it—wait for responses, then split off the new article. That's less likely to get push back from other editors, and won't put you in the position of defending the significance of an article that's not finished yet. Avondale photos

Hi Mike, are you ever in the Burwood/Avondale area? I stumbled across the article for Avondale, Christchurch recently, and I was surprised to see that the only photos of the suburb are from the 2011 earthquake. No, it turns out the only posters still up are likely to be ones we created for the ICHST and OMS 150 (see Category:Posters_by_Mike_Dickison. If those are the ones in your photograph, they're now uploaded under an open licence and photographs of them could safely go into Commons as long as there's a mention and link in the description to the file, so it's clear they're not a copyright violation. That seems like a good idea! Give me a day to make some more edits to both before you do. I tend to write those species articles in the singular rather than the plural, talking about M. howittii rather than "these beetles", and I'll also put conversion templates around any units the articles use. Wikipedia diary

Hi this is a bit of a strange question from me (I'm always the one asking strange questions), but I don't know who else to ask. I have, as far as I'm aware, one of the most detailed diaries in the world. For 2 years without stopping once, I have recorded every minute of my life. Every time I switch activities, I write what I'm doing down and the time of day (I did that 163 times today). I'm also constantly writing qualitative comments like in a typical diary, writing what's happened, my thoughts and all that (I've written 5,261 words today so far). My computer also automatically takes screenshots of everything. I've got thousands of screenshots of me just editing Wikipedia for example. I'm trying to record as much as possible for people hundreds of years in the future so they know what it was like to live in this period of history, all the boring tiny details that no one ever writes down.

The reason I bring this up is because it might serve as some record of what it's like to be a Wikipedian. I've only been on Wikipedia for a couple of years so it's not much, but I wonder if there's some place you might know of where I could share it so that other people interested in Wikipedia could use it? Not sure what they'd use it for. If I suddenly died I wouldn't want all the work to get lost. Or if we zoom out from Wikipedia, do you know of anyone who may be interested in having my entire diary to learn what it was like to be a human in the 2020s?

Needing midden images

Hey Mike. For my Austrovenus stutchburyi article, I'm looking for an image of a Māori midden with shells in it. Since you're working with the archaeologists at the moment, I figured it would be worth asking if you can get them to upload any images they may have. Cite Q display of last name, first name(s)

Hi Mike, I'd very much like anyone interested in {{Cite Q}} to comment on the Talk page topic around the display of last name and first names for authors, editors and translators. This is essential for getting Cite Q to work with Harvard style references, e.g. {{sfn}} and its ilk. It's only an initial cut in the sandbox, but the display differences can be compared in the test cases.
