Do not harass users

[edit]

as you did with a user earlier this month. Users are allowed to blank their talk pages. You do not have the right to unilaterally overrule that. ~2026-42124-95 (talk) 19:44, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi ~2026-42124-95! You seem to have some misunderstandings about English Wikipedia's policies & guidelines.
  1. WP:BLANKING does state: Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred. If a user removes material from their talk page, it is normally taken to mean that the user has read and is aware of its contents. The page to which you are referring seem to be User talk:~2026-24158-46. One can see from the history at User talk:~2026-24158-46 that I have not reverted any blanking by User talk:~2026-24158-46 (talk · contribs).
  2. WP:BLANKING does not prohibit the addition of any subsequent comments.
  3. Wikipedia:User pages § What may I have in my user pages? notes that User pages are also used for administrative purposes, to make users aware of blocks, warnings, or other sanctions if they happen, and to notify of matters that may affect articles you have worked on or editorial issues you have been involved with. Please note that I am an administrator.
  4. ~2026-42124-95 seems to miscontrue my warnings as harassment. Wikipedia:WikiProject User warnings § Introduction states that User talk templates are placed on users' talk pages to advise a user against actions that disrupt Wikipedia, to advise editors of common mistakes, or to place a standard boilerplate note at the top of a page. They are designed to convey a standardized message. The purpose of user warnings is to guide good-faith testers and dissuade bad-faith vandals or editors engaging in disruptive editing.
Again, I have not reverted any blanking on User talk:~2026-24158-46, & warnings are a mechanism to communicate & educate about Wikipedia policies & guidelines. Peaceray (talk) 20:58, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

harassment from my page ~2026-42402-89 (talk) 20:03, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Noting that ~2026-42402-89 & ~2026-42124-95 (see comment immediately above) are editing from the same IP address, which I can see as an administrator.
Apparently ~2026-42402-89 is referring to User talk:~2026-24158-46. I believe ~2026-24158-46 & ~2026-42124-95 (& thus ~2026-42402-89) to be the same editor, because with this edit ~2026-42124-95 has changed me from the comment they made in the previous edit to user. However, this is my conjecture, & cannot be proved as ~2026-24158-46 comes from a different IP address than the other two temporary accounts.
The purpose of warnings is to communicate & educate. I find charges that they are harasement to be unconvincing. I believe such charges of harassment from these accounts to be attempts to deflect from ~2026-24158-46's inappropriate editing behavior. Peaceray (talk) 21:18, 30 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Admiral versus Admiral Overseas Corp edit summary

[edit]

Zenith is mentioned in Admiral (electrical appliances) but not in AOC International

yes and thats a shame. by 1995, the period referred to in the Zenith article, Admiral (electrical appliances) was not manufacturing electronics, those items had gone overseas to Admiral Overseas Corp. i had hoped to rewrite that paragraph after digging through all these trade rags and correct the wording on who rebadged who. anyways its not my encyclopedia-like thing its yours so i leave it to you. :^) ~2026-40922-77 (talk) 00:20, 13 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just because you are unwilling to add the citations to support the statements that you want to change does not mean that I am willing to pick up your work.
  • Inserting what you know without supporting it with citations is what is called original research.
  • English Wikipedia requires that verifiability so that people can check that facts or claims supported by reliable sources.
  • As the verifiability, not truth essay states in a nutshell, Any material added to Wikipedia must have been published previously by a reliable source. Editors may not add content solely because they believe it is true, nor delete content they believe to be untrue, unless they have verified beforehand with a reliable source.
I encourage you yourself to make the changes. If you have been digging through all these trade rags, you are in a far better position to know which citations to add than I am, particularly considering how my bandwidth is constrained by my contributions to this & other Wikimedia projects. Help on Methods of Research for scarce Knowledge + Help finding Infos on Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi, I'm new on wikipedia. I wasn't too confident on how new edits would be received, though your comment encouraged me to try editing/improving knowledge on topics I'm familiar with. To get to the question - how do you find information on niche topics or topics where information is less widely available or published?

Particularly, I would find it of some use if there was both a bit more detail in your style of research e.g. regarding coffeehouses, as well as links for how to research non-digitally.

I had tried to look through your archived talk page a bit, but I had difficulties finding a way of looking through either this, as well as parts of the forums that may discuss this, maybe parts of this enquiry are better suited for the teahouse, while I'd still appreciate to receive some guidance here if possible.

Thank you for your time, Avrijen (talk) 11:13, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Avrijen: Your first stop should probably be Help:Find sources. Below is some of what I do.
I often start with using Google's basic & advanced search operators. The workhorses are using quotes, parentheses, the minus sign, & uppercase OR or ||. For example, to search for Joe Schmoe who is sometimes known as Joe B. Schmoe & to exclude Wikipedia from the search, I would use this:
("Joe Schmoe" OR "Joe B. Schmoe") -site:wikipedia.org
There are several places to look at Google's advanced operators. Here's some:
Most of these operators work with the regular Google search. You can choose the news or images tabs for those. Also remember books.google.com, which has a Tools → Any view pull down menu. I recommend choosing Preview and full view.
Google Scholar is very useful for finding peer reviewed articles & other publications.
For printed sources, I recommend getting an account on WorldCat: search.worldcat.org. You can look up publications by ISBN, or by title &/or author, & can narrow down results by year. I recommend getting familiar with their advanced search (click on the slider icon to the right ot the Search field). WorldCat will provide you with a host of bibliographic information & a list of the closest libraries that have the item. If you peruse the ebooks listed, you can sometimes find a link to a copy of book on the Internet Archive (archive.org), or if the sources are out of copyright, HathiTrust (www.hathitrust.org). Sometimes there will be links to other online sources.
Once you have at least 500 edits (10 edits made in the last month) & six months of activity, you can request access to the Wikipedia Library. That provides access to many sources behind paywalls.
Finally, I recommend getting familiar with Wikipedia:Citation templates, using footnotes on English Wikpedia, & shortened footnotes. The heavy hitters are {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, & {{cite journal}}. {{sfn}} & {{harvnb}} can be useful if you are citing different pages from the same book.
I hope this is helpful for a start. Peaceray (talk) 01:17, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, you can see a variety of citation templates in use at Elizabeth Siddal, an article I helped to get to good article status. Peaceray (talk) 01:28, 28 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

You did not revert any of my edits, nor did I disparage anyone. I think you erroneously commented on my talk page. Please self-revert. Thanks. ~2026-48500-28 (talk) 23:46, 9 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@~2026-48500-28: No you did not disparage anyone, but you did disparage the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. Hemiauchenia was the one who reverted your edits with an edit summary of See WP:IMPARTIAL. Because your addition, widely refuted fringe hypothesis hardly seemed to be neutral language, I left the {{uw-npov1}} warning on your talk page. Peaceray (talk) 04:14, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was not uncited. It was cited in the body. The language had been in the first sentence verbatim as I restored it for at least a year. The other user changed “widely refuted” to "widely rejected" and moved it to later in the lead and that language IS uncited. They also removed fringe and its citation from the body, though they have restored it to the lead after finally reading the source material and cited it there. You are blatantly wrong and I encourage you to do far more due diligence in the future before making allegations of disparagement, particularly in cases where you are not even involved. Best of luck to you, and again, do not contact me further, ~2026-48500-28 (talk) 10:01, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see your point, & I would have striked out my warning & left a comment as to why, but I see that you have blanked your talk page. I encourage you, as the Bold, Revert, Discuss essay suggests, to work things out at Talk:Younger Dryas impact hypothesis. If you need further input, you can use the {{please see}} template at WT:GEOL, WT:WikiProject Alternative views, & WT:SKEPTICISM as long as you adhere to WP:CANVASS. You can also request a third opinion.
As to not contacting you in the future, it is unlikely that I would contact you unless there was a problem with one of your other edits. Peaceray (talk) 17:39, 10 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you had bothered to look at the talk page, you would have seen I had already done that, which is what led to the other user restoring it. All of which preceded your post on my talk page. ~2026-48500-28 (talk) 02:05, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The reality is that I have nearly 17,000 pages on my watchlist that I check at least daily. I look first for edits by users (registered & unregistered) without talk pages. The first thing I do is welcome users. If I see that the edit has been reverted another user who has not left a warning message & I think the revert had a purpose, I will leave a semi-automated warning message to explain why an edit was reverted. I figure that if someone's edit has been reverted, we owe a courtesy to that editor to explain what policies & guidelines applied to the revert.
I also am an administrator, so I also perform administrative tasks. This does not leave me much time to check the talk pages when an article edit has been reverted. I may not have refreshed my watchlist page to bring up your 2026-09-08T11:33:36 edit when I made my 2026-09-09T05:28:32 edit commenting on your 2026-09-08T11:26:29 edit, as I am often working a backlog from the previous day. Also, I tend to trust experienced editors, & Hemiauchenia has nearly 77,000 edits.
I probably made a mistake largely because of my work flow. Often I will check to see what other contributions an editor has made (Special:Contributions/~2026-48500-28 in your case), but sometimes that slip by in the interest of time. I am not perfect, but I think this is a case where assume good faith might be applied to my own edits. I think I do generally well considering that my edits (search on reverted) rarely get reverted by someone other than myself.
If you think you can do better, then I humbly invite you to consider doing page patrols yourself.
Finally, I will note that the reason for Bold, Revert, Discuss is to allow civil discourse that may lead to changing an article. In this case, it seems to have worked, has it not? Peaceray (talk) 06:52, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
