Reflections
[edit]It's been a long time since I've edited here, and really have no idea how many of my former colleagues here are still active. But who knows; maybe some still are and will see this. Wikipedia really is a miracle: the fact that an encyclopedia created and governed nearly purely by volunteers has become the leading encyclopedia on a wide range of topics is remarkable. And I'm glad I was able to play a part in that.
I created my account when I was 14 years old, wrote my first featured article at 17, and became an admin at 19. But after starting college I found myself with shifting priorities: between studies, athletics, and...typical college student experiences, my time for Wikipedia started dwindling. Fast forward to now: I'm 31 and I have a stable career, a wonderful community of people in my life, and the drive to push myself in the mountain sports that are such a big part of my life now. There's no time for Wikipedia. And that's not a bad thing: we all pass through different phases of life with different interests and priorities.
Looking back a decade ago, are there things I'd do differently now? Of course there are: I have the benefit of years of life experiences. Am I proud of what I accomplished on Wikipedia during my time here? Absolutely yes as well. My work here has satiated many a person's curiosities, aided research, and resulted in meaningful progress towards creating the world's most comprehensive encyclopedia. I daresay that's pretty impressive. And major thanks to the people here who supported this work and made contributing here such a pleasant and collaborative experience. If you're wondering if you're one of those people, then you probably are.
Who knows, maybe one day my priorities will change again and I'll be back to write more content here. But that time is not now, nor is it in the foreseeable future; catch me on the mountain trails, mountain peaks, and ski slopes of the Western US instead. If anyone is around to read this, wishing you all the best.
