Stepping inside Betty Jean’s Bakery, Dee paused to inhale deeply, while Ryo looked around the nearly empty space with a frown.
“It looks like a ghost town in here,” he remarked.
“It’s the middle of the mornin’,” said Dee. “Early mornin’ rush is over and the lunch crowd ain’t here yet.”
Only two tables were occupied. Four elderly women held court at one, while a lone man sat at the other. His back was to the wall, and the ill fit of his suit coat revealed the presence of a holster to the trained eye.
Ryo stepped forward. “Detective Keller?”
