London Stansted

• London Stansted is the most convenient airport, in terms of location and amenities
• There are regular flights from Paris, Amsterdam and a number of other European destinations; there are connections to destinations worldwide through KLM UK (via Amsterdam)
• National Express run coaches to and from London Stansted every 2 hours, stopping at Parkside in Cambridge city centre, taking about 50 minutes
• There is an hourly direct train service to Cambridge that takes approximately 30 minutes
• The distance to drive is about 25 miles to the south of Cambridge from London Stansted, taking you about 40 minutes
  • Follow the signs to the M11 and turn on to it going north towards Cambridge (see by road from London)

London Gatwick

• National Express run regular coaches to and from Gatwick Airport every 2 hours, stopping at Parkside in Cambridge city centre, taking about 4 hours
• There is a direct rail link from Gatwick to London Victoria Station and from there you can either proceed by coach, from Victoria Coach Station, or by rail, taking the underground (Victoria line) to King’s Cross or Liverpool Street (change from Victoria line to Central line at Oxford Circus) to take a train to Cambridge
• Driving from Gatwick to Cambridge takes about 2 hours:
  • Follow the signs to the M23 north towards London
  • Leave at exit 7, turning right to follow the M25 east anti-clockwise around London
  • Cross the Thames at Dartford Tunnel(toll applies)
  • Leave the M25 at exit 27, north onto the M11 towards Cambridge (see by road from London)

London Heathrow

• National Express run regular coaches to and from London Heathrow every hour, stopping at Parkside in Cambridge city centre, taking about 2 hours 50 minutes
  • You need to go to London Heathrow Central Bus Station (for Terminals 1, 2 and 3) or outside Arrivals at Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 to pick up the coach
• To travel by train, take the underground (Piccadilly line) to either King’s Cross (direct line) or Liverpool Street (change to Central line at Holborn); the underground service is quite frequent and takes about an hour to reach either station
• Driving from Heathrow to Cambridge takes about 1 hour 40 minutes:
  • Follow the signs to the M25 and turn onto it in the direction of Watford
  • Leaving at exit 27 onto the M11 going north to Cambridge

London City

• Although National Express do not go to London City Airport, they do run regular coaches that stop at a number of destinations close by, such as Canary Wharf, Bank and Stratford, from which the airport is easily accessible via the Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
  • The total journey time between London City Airport and Cambridge (coach + DLR) is about 2 hours 40 minutes

London Luton

• National Express run coaches to and from London Luton every 2 hours, stopping at Parkside in Cambridge city centre, taking about 1 hour 35 minutes

Bus

The Universal (U) bus service operates between Addenbrookes, West Cambridge and the Madingley Park and Ride with an additional stop at the railway station.

The service operates a new 15 minute frequency Mon – Fri and a new 20min service on Saturdays between Madingley Park and Ride and the railway station.

Discounts apply for University card holders, just show the driver your card and pay just £1 per journey. Non university card holders also get a reduce journey price of £2 one-way.

Coach

There are National Express coach services to Cambridge from Victoria Coach Station in London approximately every hour. There are also services to other cities and all major airports.

National Express coaches stop at Parkside, in the centre of Cambridge, just over a mile from the Institute. To reach the Institute from Parkside, take a taxi, costing about £5-£7.

Directions

From London: There are frequent trains to and from Cambridge from London King’s Cross and London Liverpool Street; the faster trains from Kings Cross take just under an hour. Cambridge railway station is about 2.5 miles from the Institute, which is most easily reached by taxi. The taxi rank is to the right just outside the station building. Alternatively, the Universal bus (Stop 8 at the train station) stops a short walk away on both Grange Road and Madingley Road.

From the North: Trains from the North-East towards London change at Peterborough for connections to Cambridge. Some trains from the North-West may necessitate a change in London or Birmingham. It is generally better to avoid changing in London where possible, as it can be inconvenient travelling across the city, and fares are often considerably more expensive than those on services that do not go via London.

From London: The simplest route is to take the M11 motorway leaving at exit 13 (the third exit marked for Cambridge) and turn right onto the A1303 towards Cambridge (Madingley Road). After 1.1 miles turn right at the traffic lights onto Grange Road and then take the first right onto Clarkson Road.

From the North: Take the A1 south, leaving by the A14 sign posted for M11 and Cambridge. Exit from the A14, just before it turns into the M11, by the A1307 into Cambridge. After 2.4 miles (just after the 30mph speed limit signs and just before the Cambridge Lodge Hotel on your right), turn right onto Storey’s Way. Follow this round to a T-junction and then turn left onto Madingley Road. Take the first right at the traffic lights onto Grange Road followed by the first right onto Clarkson Road.

Parking: The Institute has limited car parking and a parking permit is required. Please ask at the reception desk on arrival.
