As announced at GitHub Universe on Tuesday, October 29th, Claude 3.5 Sonnet is now available to all GitHub Copilot customers!

Loving the Sonnet preview. Few things I've noticed is it is more aggressive at changing things outside the scope of the query. This can be good and bad, depending on the context. On the good side, it will often add code that directly relates to the task, on a line that is appropriate. However, sometimes it changes things, seemingly, arbitrarily.

Biggest downside is it takes a lot longer than GPT 4o, tho it is similar to o1. Sometimes I feel that it is because it is over-zealous reading context of very large files, even if I only highlight a few lines. Would like a "mini" version of Sonnet, if that ever becomes feasible.

And got answer, it's same as any other model 4k in 4 out and overall for entire chat is 8k tokens.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is capable for 200k context, but limited to 150k over GitHub copilot from my experience.

My guess is that they are trying to slowly get users away from JetBrains to MS products by prioritizing other solutions and delaying any new features or fixes for JetBrains IDEs almost indefinitely. They've wagered that people will rather give up JetBrains IDEs than Copilot, but they cannot stop supporting JetBrains (yet) either. It's sad, but until there's a real competing plugin solution for JetBrains, we just have to play along.

Why so big delay? Vscode is not good for Android/Flutter or Go so I use Android Studio and Golang. It would be great to have support there. I won't switch to vscode just because you delay features.

To be fair, Github Copilot is an MS product that is monetized. I don't use VS Code (except when experimenting with upcoming copilot features, heh) but as far as I know, it's completely free. Does VS Code integrate deeply with other monetized MS products where this sort of ulterior motive would make sense?

IMHO, I totally get why the Jetbrains plugin is second class. After all, with both VS Code and Copilot now being MS owned you get good vertical integration. Although I still wish they released new features on the Jetbrains IDE side as quickly/aggressively as they do with VS Code. I'm not quite so bearish on it as you are, though, since MS does at least have a financial incentive to support it, given there are hardcore users such as us who can't live without it but also want to both use and pay for GH Copilot. 😁

The single thread chat with no memory and ancient code suggestion model are more than useless, they introduce more problems than they fix.

I will not switch to VS code, it's inferior in so many ways. If you want to force people to your products, at least make something competitive.

It seems to be only chat still, yes. However, there is a setting for "Selected Completion Model", which takes a "model ID", but I can't figure out how to find the model ID's.

sometimes i need to reset the context. it seems like reloading the VSCode is the only way to do that at the moment.

For some reason I can't select Sonnet (or anything besides the default model) in Copilot/Visual Studio. I've enabled Sonnet in my Github Copilot settings about 12 hours ago, restarted VS, booted my PC, etc - but nothing. Why could that be? Thank you!

Are you using Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio? Right now the model picker is only in Visual Studio Code but Visual Studio is on the roadmap!

It is said that in 17.12 https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/visualstudio/releases/2022/release-notes model changing is supported. However, there is no such pick, and Claude is not mentioned. Release notes seem misleading.

Same issue. Claude enabled in Copilot policies -> was not available in vs code -> restarted vs code -> still not available -> reinstalled extension -> still not available -> Updating VS code fixed this issue for me.

Same issue for my org. Preview feature is enabled and some engineers are seeing the model selection, but most are not. We have confirmed vs code versions, chat logs, extension versions, etc... We also tried logging out of GitHub and some have reinstalled vs code. Still no dropdown.

I tested Claude Sonnet 3.7 in Copilot (VSCode) and I am extremely underwhelmed. It's lazy, ignores majority of prompts and the code delivered is more like a concept than anything you'd want to ever use.
Maybe it's good for tiny tasks but for any serious work it is useless in Copilot.
It also definitely is not "thinking", so they disabled that behavior. No matter what you prompt it.

Interestingly the option to use it was there and now it's gone again, I guess they are reworking it.
For this to be a good addition it should perform like o3-mini: by having thinking ability, proper context etc.

I enabled Claude Sonnet 3.7 in my organizations github. However, it does not show up in VS Code. Other users are having issues also not having it show up. I am a github copilot business user. However, it showed up in Windsurf with no issues when I did the update.

So it appears it was added back again, the version yesterday was really bad in VSCode
Today I gave the "Thinking 3.7" model a try and it immediately rejected to work.
"Sorry, the response hit the length limit. Please rephrase your prompt."
I've never had that before ...

So hard to tell if the thinking model is delivering useful output, the non thinking one was useless to me.

GPT-4o is able to read from the SAME private GitHub repository.

Returns file contents with line numbers

This suddenly stopped working mid chat and since then the chat shows

The biggest hurdle to overcome seems to be the inability for a Copilot Pro account user to connect it to their paid/Pro plan for Claude for better capabilities. At least I've not found a way to do that. Enabling that would make it actually useful.
