What will happen to what's left of my GitHub Copilot Pro subscription? #196694
-
🏷️ Discussion TypeQuestion 💬 Feature/Topic AreaCopilot in GitHub BodyI've had a GitHub Copilot Pro annual subscription for two years. My annual subscription was renewed a couple of months ago. Now, with GitHub discontinuing GitHub Copilot Pro (and Pro+) annual subscriptions, what's going to happen to the remainder of my subscription? Will it be in my account, so that it will be deducted monthly, until it is gone? |

If your annual Copilot Pro subscription was renewed before GitHub discontinued annual plans, you should still retain access for the full prepaid subscription period. GitHub generally honors already active annual subscriptions until their expiry date. Most likely, once the current annual term ends: your plan will switch to the available monthly billing option, or I don’t think the remaining value will be converted into monthly credits unless GitHub specifically announces such a policy. Checking your Billing & Plans page should show the current renewal behavior for your account. |

GitHub has officially announced what happens to annual subscribers. Here is the full picture based on their recent announcement: Your annual plan is protected until it expires Users on annual Pro or Pro+ plans will remain on their existing plan with premium request-based pricing until their plan expires. So your renewed subscription will continue to work normally until its expiry date, nothing gets cut short. What happens at expiration After it expires, you'll be moved to a Copilot Free plan unless you sign up for a new monthly paid subscription. It will not automatically deduct monthly from a credit balance, you would need to actively choose a new monthly plan. There is a catch starting June 1, 2026 Model multipliers will increase on June 1 for annual plan subscribers only. This means while you keep access, your premium request units (PRUs) will cost more per model interaction even before your plan expires. The recommended path GitHub suggests GitHub recommends switching to a usage-based monthly plan on June 1, and will provide credits that reflect the prorated amount left on your annual plan subscription. So if you switch voluntarily, you are not throwing away what you paid. Important note on cancellation The refund window (cancel before May 20 for a prorated refund) has now closed as of today. If you want to stay on your current annual plan through expiry, you can, but be aware of the model multiplier changes on June 1. If you want to switch to monthly with credits applied, that option is available from June 1 onwards. |
