Maintainer review pass. The bug is real and the diagnosis is the good kind — a miss message that says "re-run the tool to regenerate it" against a result that is oversized by construction is a closed loop, and the live repro (parent re-delegating forever, run never reaching a terminal event) is the evidence that makes it more than a reading of the code. The message rewrite is clearly right, and I like that the test asserts every mention of re-running is the negated one rather than just grepping for "do not re-run". Two things before this can land. 1. The

A large tool result is compacted to a summary plus a `retrieve_tool_output(hash)` / `⟦tj:hash⟧` marker, with the original offloaded to the CCR store. When the model later retrieves that hash and the store misses, the error told it to "re-run the tool to regenerate it" — so it re-ran, produced the same oversized result, which was compacted and offloaded again under a new hash that missed just as fast. On a live instance this made chat never answer: a parent agent re-delegated to a subagent forever on an evicted result, burning turns and cost with no reply. Two changes remove the loop: - The retrieve-miss message no longer instructs a blind re-run. It tells the model the original is gone, to NOT re-run the same call, and to proceed with the compacted summary it already has (retrying only with narrower arguments if a specific detail is essential). A worst case is now a slightly less detailed answer, not an unbounded loop. Applies to both `retrieve_tool_output` and `tokenjuice_retrieve`. - `ccr_disk_enabled` now defaults ON. The in-memory CCR store is FIFO-bounded (256 entries) and lost on restart, so a retrieve footer the model was handed can go stale within a single busy turn — the disk tier (TTL + size-cap gc'd) keeps those originals recoverable, so a compaction footer is a promise the store can actually keep. The miss-message assertion passed on a message that both forbade and
instructed a re-run: `contains("do not re-run")` is satisfied while a bare
"re-run the tool" sits elsewhere in the same string, which reads to the
model as permission and is exactly the loop this fixes.
Scan the message instead — every occurrence of "re-run" must be preceded
by "do not".
The `ccr_disk_enabled` default flip that used to ride along in this commit
is split out (see the PR discussion): it is a data-at-rest product decision
and does not belong in a loop fix.

Rebased onto On the split. You said it wasn't yours to decide and that you weren't asking me to change it unprompted. Fair — but your reasoning for why it should be separate is right, and acting on it costs nothing: "tool results are now written to disk by default" is a data-at-rest change that deserves its own decision, and bundling it meant a reviewer had to accept both or neither. The loop fix now stands alone on its own merit, which is what you said would unblock it. The flip is not lost. The `retrieve_tool_output` miss test still used the weaker exact-phrase
check while its `tokenjuice_retrieve` twin had been strengthened, which is
an asymmetry with real consequences in both directions:
`!contains("re-run the tool")` accepts a bare "re-run the same call"
elsewhere in the message — permission, as far as the model is concerned,
and the loop this PR fixes — and rejects the perfectly good "Do not re-run
the tool".
Use the same cursor scan as the tokenjuice test: every occurrence of
"re-run" must be preceded by "do not".

Summary
Chat could hang forever and never answer. A large tool result is compacted to a summary plus a
retrieve_tool_output(hash)/⟦tj:hash⟧marker, with the original offloaded to the CCR store. When the model later retrieved that hash and the store missed, the error told it to "re-run the tool to regenerate it" — so it re-ran, produced the same oversized result, which was compacted and offloaded again under a new hash that missed just as fast. Observed live: a parent agent re-delegated to a subagent forever on an evicted result, burning turns and cost with no reply. Two changes remove the loop:
retrieve_tool_outputandtokenjuice_retrieve.ccr_disk_enablednow defaults ON. The in-memory CCR store is FIFO-bounded (256 entries) and lost on restart, so a retrieve footer the model was handed can go stale within a single busy turn. The disk tier (TTL + size-cap gc'd) keeps those originals recoverable, so a compaction footer becomes a promise the store can actually keep. Existing configs that explicitly setfalseare unchanged. The subagent side (a specialist re-calling a succeeding tool with varied args) is already bounded by the iteration cap; the unbounded behaviour was the parent's re-delegation, which these changes stop.
Tests
retrieve_tool_output: addeda_cache_miss_does_not_tell_the_model_to_re_run(asserts the miss discourages re-running and points at the summary). 3 pass.tokenjuice_retrieve: addedmiss_message_does_not_instruct_a_blind_re_run. 4 pass.openhuman::config(427),openhuman::tinyagents::middleware(51),tools::implementations::system(187) — green.Validation
Reproduced and confirmed fixed on a live instance: before, the parent run never reached a terminal event and its
delegate_to_integrations_agentcount kept growing; after, delegation is bounded (2), the run reachesrun_completed, and the user gets a full itemised answer.Summary by CodeRabbit
