Honor the configured memory embedding provider in the default embedder - #5737
Conversation
…default embedder
default_embedding_provider_with_config() hard-coded the managed cloud
embedder, ignoring the user's [memory] embedding_provider. On a local /
offline install every memory-sync embed batch 401'd against the backend
proxy ('openai embeddings returned HTTP 401 … Invalid token') and
documents persisted vector-less, while the configured local Ollama
embedder sat unused.
The default now builds the configured provider first (with its
credential via resolve_api_key); cloud/managed/unset keep today's
managed default, and a provider that fails to build falls back to it
with a warning.

Maintainer review — the fix is still needed and still correct; it needs a rebase and three review threads closed. Read-only pass; I have not pushed to this branch and have not approved it. @nocstah — verified against The bug is still live. The conflict is positional, not semantic. Two things moved under you:
Your call path survives: The three open threads. All three are legitimate — please address them rather than skip any:
One design note, not a blocker and explicitly your call: since The change itself is the right fix for #5730. Rebase, move the tests, close the three threads, tick the checklist and this should go green. |

The embedding provider string is now kept in its original form for credential resolution, while only the construction input is trimmed and normalized. This prevents a mismatch where trimming before lookup could select a different credential than the one stored by settings. Additionally, custom endpoint providers are now supported by extracting the endpoint from a "custom:" prefix and passing it to the provider factory, and a warning is logged when a configured provider has no stored credential. Add a validation function for custom embedding provider endpoints that rejects empty strings and, when credentials are present, requires HTTPS or loopback HTTP. The factory now applies this validation when a custom provider is configured, falling back to the managed cloud embedder with a warning if the endpoint is invalid or missing. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Reformatted two match arms in the embedding provider factory to use a single-line body instead of a block, reducing unnecessary braces and improving readability without any behavioural change. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When determining whether a custom embedding provider requires an API key, the code was incorrectly checking the parsed custom endpoint instead of the raw, unparsed endpoint value. This caused the key requirement to be evaluated against the wrong variable, potentially misidentifying providers that should require a key. The fix uses the raw custom endpoint for this check, ensuring the key requirement logic works correctly. Auto-committed-on: dragonfly Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>

Reorder the match arms in the embedding provider factory so that the warning about missing credentials is emitted when the provider is built successfully but lacks an API key, rather than being silently handled by the catch-all Ok arm. This ensures users are properly notified when a configured provider cannot be used due to missing credentials and the system falls back to the managed cloud embedder. Validate custom endpoints before the setup probe
When a user supplies a custom API key with a non-loopback HTTP endpoint, this new check rejects the endpoint during live provider construction, but update_settings still calls probe_custom_embeddings first, which attaches that key as a bearer token (rpc_part_01.rs lines 324-334 and 98-100), and persists the configuration after a successful probe (line 512). The UI can therefore report the endpoint as verified and saved—even after transmitting the credential—while subsequent embedding attempts reject the same configuration; apply the same validation before probing or saving it.
