fix(theme): reject an import whose colors are null, an array, or empty - #5946
Conversation
`"colors": null` passed validation and produced an activatable theme with zero
colour tokens.
The shape check was:
if (!parsed || typeof parsed !== 'object' || typeof parsed.colors !== 'object')
and `typeof null === 'object'`, so null slipped through. Execution reached
`colors: { ...(parsed.colors) }`, and spreading null yields `{}` rather than
throwing — so the theme was written to the store and could be activated from
the gallery, applying nothing.
`typeof [] === 'object'` too, so an array was the same hole by a second route.
Both are covered now.
**Empty `{}` is refused as well, and that is a judgement call worth stating.**
Its user-visible outcome is identical to null: `applyTheme` writes one CSS
custom property per token, and `withDerivedChrome` derives only FROM existing
tokens (`lib/theme/chrome.ts:67-79`), so a zero-token theme applies nothing at
all — a named entry in the gallery that silently does nothing when clicked.
Accepting `{}` while rejecting `null` would fix the shape and leave the defect
that motivated the report.
The cost, stated plainly: a fonts-or-backdrop-only theme can no longer be
imported without at least one colour. That was never really supported — `colors`
has always been a required field on this path — and it is the narrower trade
against shipping a theme that does nothing. A single-token theme still imports,
and there is a test pinning that so the guard cannot drift into over-rejecting.
Replaces the inline `typeof` test with a `hasColorTokens` type predicate at
module scope, so the intent reads at the call site and the narrowing is explicit.
Verified by reading `ThemeStudioPanel.tsx:178-196`, `providers/ThemeProvider.tsx:38-60`
and `lib/theme/chrome.ts:67-79`; NOT executed — a fleet-wide no-local-builds rule
is in force, so CI is the check.

app/src/components/settings/panels/ThemeStudioPanel.tsx:86–93 — hasColorTokens validates the container shape but not the value types
The predicate claims colors is Record<string, string> but only checks that the object is non-empty. It returns true for {"surface": null} or {"surface": 42}.
Those values are then stored and eventually reach channelsToCss / swatchChannels, which calls .trim() or .split() on the token value. Calling .trim() on null throws TypeError: Cannot read properties of null, crashing the theme panel for anyone who imports that JSON.
Fix:
function hasColorTokens(colors: unknown): colors is Record<string, string> {
return (
typeof colors === 'object' &&
colors !== null &&
!Array.isArray(colors) &&
Object.keys(colors).length > 0 &&
Object.values(colors as object).every(v => typeof v === 'string')
);
}And add a test alongside the existing table:
it('refuses a theme whose color values are not strings', () => {
const { store } = renderWithProviders(<ThemeStudioPanel />, {
preloadedState: { theme: themeState },
initialEntries: ['/settings/theme'],
});
fireEvent.change(screen.getByLabelText('Import theme'), {
target: {
value: JSON.stringify({ name: 'Bad', isDark: false, colors: { surface: null } }),
},
});
fireEvent.click(screen.getByRole('button', { name: 'Import' }));
expect(screen.getByText('Could not parse that theme JSON.')).toBeInTheDocument();
expect(store.getState().theme.customThemes).toHaveLength(0);
});Two review findings, both correct. The first reverses a decision I argued for
in the original commit and got wrong.
**Empty `{}` is now ACCEPTED (chatgpt-codex).** I had rejected it, reasoning
that a zero-token theme applies nothing and is therefore as broken as `null`.
That reasoning was wrong, and the counter-example is in this repo:
`CLASSIC_LIGHT` and `CLASSIC_DARK` both carry `colors: {}` deliberately
(`lib/theme/presets.ts:63-78`). They inherit the base stylesheet tokens and
carry their meaning in `isDark`, which `applyTheme` applies independently of any
colour (`providers/ThemeProvider.tsx:48-50`). And `exportJson` serialises the
effective theme, so with Classic active the panel's own Export box emits
`colors: {}` — which my check then refused on Import, breaking the panel's
export -> import round trip for the two most common themes, and refusing
legitimate font-, gradient- or backdrop-only themes with it.
The actual tinyhumansai#5901 defect is unchanged and still fixed: `null` and arrays are
malformed and are rejected, because `typeof null === 'object'` and
`typeof [] === 'object'` let both past the old check and `{ ...null }` yields
`{}` silently.
**Token values must now be strings (CodeRabbit).** The predicate claimed
`Record<string, string>` while only checking the container, so
`{"surface": 42}` was accepted and stored. `swatchChannels` falls back only on
null/undefined (`??`), so a non-string reaches `channelsToCss`, which calls
`.trim()` on it and throws — crashing the panel on a theme already in the store.
Renamed `hasColorTokens` -> `isValidColorMap`, since after the first change the
predicate is about validity, not emptiness.
Verified locally, all through the fleet CI semaphore:
- `ThemeStudioPanel.test.tsx` 14/14 pass; `tsc --noEmit` exit 0, 0 errors.
- Revert-proof, string values: replacing the value check with `return true`
fails exactly the 4 non-string cases.
- Revert-proof, container: dropping the null/array guard fails the array case.
Null still rejects, but only incidentally — `Object.values(null)` throws into
the outer catch. The explicit guard makes that rejection intentional rather
than an exception caught by a broad handler, which is why it stays.

Summary
"colors": nullpassed theme-import validation and produced an activatable theme with zero colour tokens.typeof []is also'object'.{}is accepted — I initially refused it, which was wrong and broke the panel's own export → import round trip; reversed in review (see below).{"surface": 42}was stored and then crashed the panel on.trim().typeoftest with ahasColorTokenstype predicate at module scope.Problem
ThemeStudioPanel.tsx:151(onmainbefore this change):typeof null === 'object', so"colors": nullpasses. Execution then reachesand spreading
nullyields{}rather than throwing — so the theme is written to the store viaupsertCustomThemeand appears in the gallery, where it can be activated. Activating it applies no palette at all.typeof [] === 'object'as well, so"colors": []was the same defect by a second route.Expected, per the issue: rejected with the same "Could not parse that theme JSON." as any other malformed paste.
Solution
A type predicate at module scope, so the call site reads as intent rather than as three
typeofclauses, and the narrowing is explicit.On empty
{}— I got this wrong first, and reversed it in reviewThe issue asks whether
{}should also be refused. I originally said yes and argued it at length here. That was wrong, and chatgpt-codex caught it — the correction is inb5f9287ad.My reasoning had been that a zero-token theme "applies nothing at all". The counter-example is in this repo:
Both carry
colors: {}deliberately — they inherit the base stylesheet tokens and carry their meaning inisDark, whichapplyThemeapplies independently of any colour (providers/ThemeProvider.tsx:48-50).Worse,
exportJsonisJSON.stringify(activeMeta ?? effectiveTheme), so with Classic active the panel's own Export box emitscolors: {}— which my check refused on Import. I had broken the panel's own export → import round trip for the two most common themes, and refused legitimate font-, gradient- or backdrop-only themes along with it.{}is now accepted, with a test asserting it imports and keeps itsisDark.Token values must be strings
Raised by CodeRabbit in the same round. The predicate claimed
Record<string, string>but only checked the container, so{"surface": 42}was accepted and stored.swatchChannelsfalls back only on null/undefined (??), so a non-string reacheschannelsToCss, which calls.trim()and throws — crashing the panel on a theme already in the gallery.Final shape:
Renamed from
hasColorTokens, since after the reversal it is about validity rather than emptiness.Impact
