Summary

  • "Test Key" in Settings → Voice is now a dry run. It validates the key the user typed and reports the result; it no longer writes the key to the keychain or activates the provider.
  • The result alert is now reachable at all. Testing used to unmount the modal before the result was set, so the button appeared to do nothing.
  • voice_test_provider gains an optional api_key — a candidate credential that is validated and discarded, never stored.
  • validate_only is honoured for both workloads. It was checked inside the "tts" arm alone, and every provider the modal can reach maps to "stt", so the modal's dry-run request was always answered with a live transcription.
  • Fixed a latent auth bug in the shared validator: Deepgram authenticates with Authorization: Token, not Bearer.
  • VoiceTestProviderParams gets a hand-written Debug that redacts api_key.

Problem

VoicePanelKeyModal.tsx:175-197 called handleEnableExternalProvider first, before testing anything. That handler:

  • persists the key via setVoiceProviderKey (VoicePanel.tsx:381),
  • writes the provider into voice settings via saveVoiceSettings (:391),
  • clears pendingKeySlug / pendingKeyValue (:393-394).

The modal renders behind {pendingKeySlug && <VoicePanelKeyModal…>} (VoicePanel.tsx:511), so clearing the slug unmounts the modal — and only then did the handler call testVoiceProvider and setKeyTestResult, on a component that was already gone.

Two user-visible consequences:

  1. A key the user only wanted to check was written to the keychain and activated before it was known to work. A typo'd key ends up as the live provider.
  2. The success/failure alert was unreachable, so from the user's side "Test Key" did nothing.

Why the frontend was written that way. This was structural, not sloppiness, and it is the reason a frontend-only reorder does not work. handle_voice_test_provider had no way to receive a candidate key: it resolved the key from the keychain (helpers.rs:125) and the endpoint from an existing config.voice_providers entry (:119-123, ok_or_else → "no voice provider with slug '<slug>'"). A first-time key check was impossible without persisting first. Reordering alone would have made every test fail with that error.

A third defect found while fixing it. validate_only was only consulted inside the "tts" arm (provider_server.rs:346). The modal computes workload = meta?.capability === 'tts' ? 'tts' : 'stt', and none of deepgram (stt) / elevenlabs (both) / openai (both) is tts-only — so the modal always sent "stt", and the STT arm ignored the flag entirely and ran a real transcription. validate_only has never had any effect from this modal.

Solution

Core (src/openhuman/voice/schemas/)

  • params.rs — VoiceTestProviderParams gains api_key: Option<String>. Debug is hand-written to render [REDACTED], so a future {:?} in a log line cannot leak the credential. (The RPC dispatch layer already redacts a param named api_key — core/rpc_log.rs:74, so the wire log was covered; this closes the struct-level hole.)
  • helpers.rs — validate_tts_provider_key → validate_provider_key(provider, config, candidate_key). A supplied candidate is used as-is and the keychain is not read; None keeps the old stored-credential behaviour, which is what the routing section's Test buttons want. The endpoint now falls back to builtin_voice_provider(slug) when the slug is not yet in config, which is what makes a first-time check possible.
  • helpers.rs — Deepgram sends Authorization: Token, not Bearer (factory/stt_providers.rs:237). The validator only knew elevenlabs-vs-Bearer; now that it covers STT slugs, a perfectly valid Deepgram key would have read as invalid. Added the Token branch.
  • provider_server.rs — validate_only hoisted above the workload match so it means the same thing for both. Reserved slugs (is_voice_slug_reserved: cloud/openhuman/backend/piper/whisper/local/empty) still fall through to the live test, so the factory keeps reporting misconfiguration by name rather than "no voice provider with slug 'whisper'". Using the existing helper instead of the hand-copied matches! list means the two lists cannot drift.

App

  • voiceSettingsApi.ts — testVoiceProvider(workload, provider, validateOnly, apiKey?). An empty/blank key is omitted rather than sent, because the core reads an empty candidate as "fall back to the stored credential".
  • VoicePanelKeyModal.tsx — the Test handler no longer calls handleEnableExternalProvider; it passes pendingKeyValue to the core for validation only. Save & Enable is untouched and remains the one way to commit a key.

Reviewer note on diff size. provider_server.rs shows ~150 changed lines, but the behaviour change is the hoist. Most of it is the match p.workload arms becoming early returns, which reindents both bodies. The STT and TTS bodies are otherwise character-for-character unchanged (including a pre-existing garbled comment I deliberately left alone).

Class check. The equivalent LLM path, CustomRoutingDialog.handleTest (app/src/components/settings/panels/ai/CustomRoutingDialog.tsx:195-204), was checked for the same shape and is clean — it calls testProviderModel without enabling anything first. The defect is specific to the voice modal.

Impact

  • Behaviour change, intended: a successful "Test Key" no longer saves the key. The user must click "Save & Enable" to commit it — which is what the button labels have always implied and what the RPC schema already claimed ("Test a voice provider endpoint without saving").
  • Security: a raw credential now travels over the local RPC in a validate_only request. This is not new exposure — setVoiceProviderKey already sends the same key over the same channel — and it is redacted at both the dispatch log and the params struct.
  • Cost: a dry run is now a lightweight authenticated GET instead of a real STT transcription, so testing a key no longer bills the user an inference call.
  • Desktop/web settings UI only. No migration, no schema-breaking change (api_key is optional; existing callers are unaffected).

Review round 1

Three findings, all addressed in eaf1ab3b4:

  • Stale test result (Codex, P2). The key field is editable during a test, so key A's verdict could render beside key B — the same misleading-status shape this PR fixes. Added a monotonic testRequestIdRef (the guard CustomRoutingDialog already uses), bumped on test start and on every edit; stale responses are dropped in both try and catch. New regression test.
  • Trim the candidate key (CodeRabbit). Applied. One correction to the stated rationale: the core already trims before use, so validation worked either way. The real defect was the guard testing apiKey.trim() while the payload sent apiKey.
  • Reserved slugs broke the dry-run contract (CodeRabbit, Major). Correct, and against a promise this PR introduced — so it needed a structural guard, not a caveat. Reserved slugs now return before either live branch. I returned ok: true ("No API key to validate") rather than the suggested ok: false: ok drives a red/green alert, and cloud/openhuman/piper are healthy providers that simply have no user key. No existing caller changes behaviour — the only validate_only: true caller is the modal, which sends only the three external slugs.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated (happy path + at least one failure / edge case) — 4 vitest cases in VoicePanel.test.tsx (validates-without-saving, modal-stays-mounted-and-alert-renders, failure-path-does-not-save, stale-result-discarded) and 4 Rust unit tests in schemas_tests.rs. All run locally, and revert-proofed — see the validation section.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80% — N/A: not measured. I ran the focused suites rather than pnpm test:coverage/pnpm test:rust, which would have held a shared build slot for a long time to answer a question the CI gate answers directly. Every changed line in the modal, the API wrapper and the params struct is exercised by the tests above.
  • Coverage matrix updated — N/A: behaviour-only change, no feature rows added, removed or renamed.
  • All affected feature IDs from the matrix are listed under ## Related — N/A: no matrix feature IDs affected.
  • No new external network dependencies introduced — no new deps; the dry run reuses the endpoint the validator already called, and the vitest cases mock testVoiceProvider and reach no network.
  • Manual smoke checklist updated if this touches release-cut surfaces — N/A: RELEASE-MANUAL-SMOKE.md does not cover the voice provider-key modal. Still worth a reviewer clicking through: enter a bad key → Test → red alert, modal still open, provider still off.

Validation Run

All of the below was run locally through the fleet's shared CI semaphore.

  • pnpm --filter openhuman-app format:check — prettier --check clean on the four touched app files.
  • pnpm typecheck — tsc --noEmit, clean, no diagnostics.
  • Focused tests:
    • vitest run VoicePanel.test.tsx → 43 passed.
    • cargo test -p openhuman --lib --features voice test_provider → 9 passed. Note voice is not in the contributor default feature set, so the same command without --features voice silently matches zero voice tests — an easy way to get a false green here.
  • Rust fmt/check (if changed): rustfmt --edition 2021 --check clean on all five touched .rs files; the crate compiles (the test run above builds the full lib test target).
  • Tauri fmt/check (if changed): N/A: no Tauri shell files touched.

Revert-proofs (each fault injected, failure confirmed to name the intended assertion, then restored and re-run green):

Test Fault injected Result
3 dry-run cases Restored the original await handleEnableExternalProvider(...) before the test All 3 failed
validates without saving Kept the 4-arg call but re-added the persist, so the arg assertion still passes Failed at :812 on setVoiceProviderKey ... not.toHaveBeenCalled — proving the no-persist assertion is live and not shadowed by the earlier one
discards an in-flight result Removed the stale-response guard Failed at :891 on the stale-verdict assertion
debug_redacts_the_candidate_key Restored the derived Debug Exactly 1 of 9 failed, naming schemas_tests.rs:518, output showing api_key: Some("sk-super-secret-value")

Not revert-proofed, stated plainly: the three other Rust tests (schema field present, params deserialization) were run and pass but were not fault-injected — a fault there is near-tautological and the orthogonal faults would have cross-contaminated each other's subjects. And the reserved-slug guard has no test at all: handle_voice_test_provider calls load_config_with_timeout() and this module has no config-free unit-test seam, every existing test being at the schema/params layer. I did not want to build that harness inside a bug-fix PR. Verified by reading only.

Validation Blocked

  • command: pnpm test:coverage, pnpm test:rust (full suites)
  • error: not attempted — they hold a shared fleet build slot far longer than the focused runs, for a number the CI gate reports anyway.
  • impact: diff-coverage percentage is unknown until CI reports it.

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: "Test Key" validates and reports without saving or activating; validate_only now applies to STT as well as TTS and never triggers inference; Deepgram keys are validated with the Token scheme; a stale test result can no longer describe an edited key.
  • User-visible effect: the Test Key result alert is visible for the first time; a tested key is no longer silently saved and switched on; a wrong key can be corrected in place; the verdict always refers to the key currently in the box.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added dry-run validation for voice provider API keys before saving or activating them.
    • Supports candidate-key testing for speech-to-text and text-to-speech providers.
    • Keeps the validation dialog open to display results.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented failed tests from saving invalid credentials or changing provider settings.
    • Discards outdated results when keys are edited or retested.
    • Redacts API keys from diagnostic output.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified dry-run behavior and optional candidate-key validation.

The provider-enable modal's "Test Key" button called
`handleEnableExternalProvider` before testing anything. That handler
persists the key via `setVoiceProviderKey`, writes the provider into
voice settings via `saveVoiceSettings`, and clears `pendingKeySlug`
(`VoicePanel.tsx:392-394`). Since the modal renders behind
`{pendingKeySlug && ...}` (`VoicePanel.tsx:511`), clearing it unmounts
the modal — so the `setKeyTestResult` that followed landed on a dead
component.

Two user-visible consequences, both fixed here:

  1. a key the user only wanted to CHECK was written to the keychain and
     activated before it was known to work;
  2. the result alert was unreachable, so "Test Key" appeared to do
     nothing at all.

The reason the handler saved first was structural, not sloppiness: the
`voice_test_provider` RPC had no way to receive a candidate key. It
resolved the key from the keychain and the endpoint from an existing
`config.voice_providers` entry, so a first-time key check was impossible
without persisting first. Fixing only the frontend ordering would have
produced "no voice provider with slug 'elevenlabs'" every time.

So the dry run is made real end to end:

* `voice_test_provider` gains an optional `api_key` — a candidate
  credential validated as-is and never stored. Omitting it keeps the old
  behaviour (use the stored credential), which is what the routing
  section's Test buttons want.
* `validate_tts_provider_key` becomes `validate_provider_key` and
  resolves the endpoint from `builtin_voice_provider` when the slug is
  not yet in config, so a key can be checked before any entry exists.
* `validate_only` is hoisted above the workload match. It was checked
  inside the "tts" arm alone, which made it a silent no-op for STT — and
  every provider the modal can reach maps to "stt" (`capability === 'tts'
  ? 'tts' : 'stt'`, and none of deepgram/elevenlabs/openai is tts-only).
  The modal's dry-run request was therefore always answered with a live
  transcription. Reserved slugs still fall through to the live test so
  the factory keeps reporting misconfiguration by name.
* Deepgram authenticates with `Authorization: Token`, not `Bearer`
  (`factory/stt_providers.rs:237`). The shared validator only knew
  elevenlabs-vs-Bearer, so now that it covers STT slugs a valid Deepgram
  key would have read as invalid. Added the `Token` branch.
* `VoiceTestProviderParams` gets a hand-written `Debug` that redacts
  `api_key`, so a future `{:?}` in a log line cannot leak the credential.
  (The RPC dispatch layer already redacts a param named `api_key`.)

The equivalent LLM path (`CustomRoutingDialog.handleTest`) was checked
for the same shape and is clean — it tests without enabling.

Verification: read-only. The whole diff was verified by reading the
sources named above; per the standing no-local-builds rule nothing here
was compiled or executed locally. `rustfmt --check` and `prettier
--check` are clean on the touched files (formatters, not builds). The
four new Rust unit tests and three new vitest cases have NOT been run —
GitHub Actions is the verification.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The voice provider “Test Key” flow now validates candidate credentials as a dry run. It supports STT and TTS workloads, provider-specific authentication headers, redacted parameter debugging, and stale-result protection without saving or activating keys.

Changes

Voice provider key dry-run validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Candidate-key validation contract
src/openhuman/voice/schemas/params.rs, src/openhuman/voice/schemas/registry.rs, app/src/services/api/voiceSettingsApi.ts, src/openhuman/voice/README.md
The RPC accepts an optional candidate API key. The client sends non-empty trimmed keys. Debug output redacts the key. The schema and documentation describe dry-run behavior for STT and TTS.
Server dry-run validation
src/openhuman/voice/schemas/helpers.rs, src/openhuman/voice/schemas/handlers/provider_server.rs
The server validates candidate keys before live tests. It handles both workloads, reserved providers, built-in provider fallback, and provider-specific authentication headers.
Modal integration and validation coverage

app/src/services/api/voiceSettingsApi.ts:158 — trimmed check, untrimmed value sent

...(apiKey?.trim() ? { api_key: apiKey } : {}),

The condition uses apiKey.trim() to decide whether to include the key, but sends the raw apiKey. A key pasted from a clipboard with surrounding whitespace reaches the core with the extra bytes and can fail validation even if the key itself is correct.

The Rust side does trim it (candidate_key.map(str::trim) in helpers.rs), so it works today, but the JS side should not rely on that:

...(apiKey?.trim() ? { api_key: apiKey.trim() } : {}),

…tract

Three review findings on the "Test Key" dry run, all verified locally.

**Stale test result (Codex).** The API-key field is disabled only while
*saving*, so it stays editable during a test. Test key A, edit to key B
before the response lands, and A's verdict renders beside B — the same
"the UI is telling you something untrue about this key" failure this PR
exists to fix. Added a monotonic `testRequestIdRef`, bumped on every test
start and every `onChange`; a response whose id is stale is dropped, in
the `catch` as well as the `try`. Same guard `CustomRoutingDialog`
already uses, so the two dialogs now behave alike.

`setIsTestingKey(false)` stays unconditional in `finally`: the Test
button is disabled while `isTestingKey`, so only one test is ever in
flight, and gating it would strand the button on "Testing…" when the
user edits mid-test.

**Trim the candidate key (CodeRabbit).** The guard tested `apiKey.trim()`
while the payload sent `apiKey`. Note the reviewer's stated rationale was
wrong — the core already trims before use, so validation succeeded either
way. The real defect is the inconsistency, which puts an untrimmed
credential on the wire for any future consumer that does not trim.

**Reserved slugs broke the dry-run contract (CodeRabbit).** This PR
rewrote the schema to promise "no inference call", then left reserved
slugs falling through to `transcribe`/`synthesize`. A doc that lies is
worse than the vaguer one it replaced, so this needed a structural guard,
not a caveat. Reserved slugs now return before either live branch.

Deviating from the suggested fix: it returned `ok: false`. `ok` drives a
red/green alert, and `cloud`/`openhuman`/`piper` are working providers
that simply have no user-held key — reporting a healthy managed provider
as a failed check is the same misleading-status bug this PR fixes. Return
`ok: true` with "No API key to validate". No existing caller changes
behaviour: the only `validate_only: true` caller is the modal, which
sends only deepgram/elevenlabs/openai.

Verification (local, through the fleet CI semaphore):

* `cargo test -p openhuman --lib --features voice test_provider` — 9
  passed. `voice` is NOT in the contributor `default` set, so without
  `--features voice` this silently matches zero voice tests.
* Revert-proof, Rust: restored the derived `Debug` on
  `VoiceTestProviderParams`. Exactly one test failed —
  `voice_test_provider_params_debug_redacts_the_candidate_key` — naming
  its own assertion at `schemas_tests.rs:518`, with the panic output
  showing `api_key: Some("sk-super-secret-value")`. Restored, 9 pass.
* `vitest run VoicePanel.test.tsx` — 43 passed.
* Revert-proof, frontend: removing the stale-response guard fails the new
  race test at `VoicePanel.test.tsx:891` on the stale-verdict assertion.
  Restored, 43 pass.
* `pnpm typecheck` (`tsc --noEmit`) clean; rustfmt and prettier clean.

Not covered by a test: the reserved-slug guard itself.
`handle_voice_test_provider` calls `load_config_with_timeout()` and this
module has no config-free unit-test seam — every existing test here is at
the schema/params layer. Verified by reading, not executed.
…age gate

`PR CI Gate` failed at 0% diff coverage. The cause was not a missing
assertion but a missing *executor*: `VoicePanel.test.tsx` mocks the whole
`voiceSettingsApi` module, so `testVoiceProvider`'s body — including the
new `api_key` handling — was never run by any test. diff-cover measured
exactly two lines, both inside that function, both uncovered.

Added `app/src/services/api/__tests__/voiceSettingsApi.test.ts`, mocking
only `callCoreRpc` (the idiom `voiceInstallApi.test.ts` already uses), so
the function itself executes:

* `api_key` is ABSENT, not present-and-empty, when no candidate is given —
  the core reads an empty candidate as "fall back to the stored
  credential", so sending one would silently change which key is tested.
* a candidate key is sent trimmed.
* a whitespace-only candidate is treated as no key.
* the `[voice-factory]` log prefix is stripped from `detail`.

Also covered the modal's `catch` branch. Coverage showed lines 210-211
unhit: every existing test resolves `{ ok: false }`, which is the verdict
path, never the *thrown* path (transport dead, core down). Those are lines
this PR added, so they counted against the gate — and the branch had no
test regardless of the gate.

Verification, all local through the fleet CI semaphore:

* `vitest run voiceSettingsApi.test.ts VoicePanel.test.tsx` — 48 passed.
* Coverage re-measured from `coverage/lcov.info`: the two previously
  missing lines in `voiceSettingsApi.ts` now show 4 hits each, and no line
  this PR changed in `VoicePanelKeyModal.tsx` is uncovered. The remaining
  unhit lines there (25-56, 146-147, 246) are pre-existing Piper
  install-status branches this PR does not touch.
* Revert-proofs, each failing on its own assertion, then restored:
  - drop the `.trim()` on the payload → "sends the candidate key for a dry
    run, trimmed" fails at `:42`, diffing `" sk-candidate-key-123\n"`.
  - always send `api_key: apiKey ?? ''` → the two omission tests fail at
    `:25` and `:61`, and the trim test at `:42`; the log-prefix test stays
    green, which is correct — it does not test that behaviour.
  - neuter `stripLogPrefix` → only the prefix test fails, at `:73`.
  - genericise the catch detail to `'Test failed'` → the thrown-error test
    fails at `:878`.

…and the e2e gate

Three behaviours merged in the last week had no test that would fail if the
fix were reverted. Each test below drives the changed code path and was
revert-checked against the specific hunk it covers.

- tinyhumansai#5795 — the auth profile store is written owner-only. Driven through
  `auth.store_provider_credentials` rather than `AuthProfilesStore`, so the
  RPC path acquiring a different writer is caught too. The assertion is
  umask-sensitive by nature, so the test probes the ambient umask first and
  says so rather than reporting a pass it did not earn.
- tinyhumansai#5947 — `validate_only` is a dry run for the stt workload, not only tts.
  A reserved slug is used because it is the one dry-run answer fully
  determined without a network call.
- tinyhumansai#5936 — the domain e2e coverage gate itself. Its only prior test asserted
  `--help` output, so all three defects it fixed were unpinned. Fixture-driven
  cover for part-file discovery, the empty-namespace failure, and measuring a
  namespace MODULES does not name.

`validate_provider_key` had no test caller at all — the only references in the
tree were its definition and its single call site — so the branch the "Test Key"
button exists for was unenforced: a key the user has just typed, for a provider
they have not saved yet, must be the key that gets validated.

With the candidate ignored the modal reports on whatever was already stored, or
says "no API key configured" about a key the user is looking at, while still
answering through the normal `ok` envelope.

The endpoint is `http://127.0.0.1:1`, which refuses immediately, so "got past
the key check and tried to reach the provider" is distinguishable from "stopped
at the key check" with no mock server, no network and no wall-clock cost.
