fix(memory): recall facts about the user before the turn, never claim absence unsearched - #6045
Conversation
… absence unsearched
"Who is my idol and why?" answered "i don't have that one stored" while the
fact sat in the memory tree, because nothing in the turn looked: the broad
per-turn recall had been removed, the only instruction telling the model to
retrieve first was gated on `learning.enabled` (default false), and nothing
forbade asserting absence without a search.
Lane C (`memory/auto_recall/`) is a gated, bounded pre-turn recall beside the
situational-preferences lane: a lexical gate opens only for a message that owns
and asks ("my … ?", "tell me my …"), one `fast_retrieve` runs through the
session binding's guard with a limit of three, a relative score floor and a
3 s budget, and the block rides the user message, never the cached system
prompt. Switched by the existing `[subsystems.memory.hooks] auto_recall`
(`OPENHUMAN_MEMORY_HOOKS_AUTO_RECALL`), which was declared and read by nothing.
Every failure is an ordinary turn without a block.
`MemoryAccessSection` is now added whenever a retrieval tool is registered and
visible, and it forbids saying something is not stored unless a retrieval just
returned nothing. `memory_recall` no longer requires `namespace`; the default
scope is searched when it is omitted.
Lane B moves from `core_turn.rs` (743/750 lines) into `turn/recall_lanes.rs`
unchanged. `RecordingProvider::with_fast_retrieve_result` scripts the guarded
retrieval family for tests.
Closes tinyhumansai#6040
…estable Review follow-ups for the Lane C lane (tinyhumansai#6040): - A hit's scope label (`folder:profile`, `slack:#eng`) lands in the prompt next to the content, so it now gets the same one-line treatment and an 80-char cap instead of a trusted pass-through. - The boot warm-up's spawned body is a plain `warm_up_from_config` so the bind-then-warm path runs under test against whichever driver the test build binds; `spawn_at_boot` only spawns it. - Coverage matrix rows 8.4.7–8.4.9 for the lane, the warm-up and the ungated memory-access instruction.

…e, tighten the caps
Review follow-ups on the auto-recall lane:
- A hit from a source tree — email, Slack, Notion, a web page, a folder — is
third-party content whose author can write instructions. It now renders
inside the `<untrusted-source>` marker the older recall path used, with the
scope prefix as the hint; chat-tree hits stay bare, a hit with no tree at
all is wrapped (default deny).
- The gate skips politeness and filler ("please remind me…", "hey, what's
my…", "quick question, do I…") before reading the lead word.
- Non-finite scores are dropped before ranking and the sort is a total
order; a NaN can no longer sort first or slip past the relative floor.
- Character ceilings are ceilings: the truncation suffix fits inside the
per-hit, scope and `recall_max_chars` caps instead of overshooting them,
and a cap too small for the suffix yields a bare prefix.
- `memory_recall` refuses a `null` or numeric `namespace` instead of reading
it as "search the default scope".

…rs stay balanced `render_block` clipped the rendered string to `recall_max_chars`, which could cut an `<untrusted-source>` marker in half or drop a closing one and so break the boundary the marker exists to draw. The budget is now spent on whole hit lines: a hit that does not fit is left out, a cap that fits no hit yields an empty block, and a property test walks caps from zero past the full length asserting equal opening and closing marker counts.
Resolves the overlap with tinyhumansai#6046 (Lane B through DriverMemory), which landed first and touched the same turn path and test fixtures: - core_turn.rs keeps the recall_lanes call; the 5 s Lane B budget that tinyhumansai#6046 set in core_turn.rs now lives in turn/recall_lanes.rs with its rationale. - turn_tests_part_04_tests.rs stays as main has it (scripted_reply is shared as pub(super)); the Lane C turn tests move to turn_tests_part_05_tests.rs, because both blocks together would cross the 750-line layout gate. - RecordingProvider carries both the fast_retrieve result and the namespace hits/summaries; the coverage matrix and .claude/memory.md keep both entries.
tinyhumansai#6045 (Lane C auto-recall) merged first and touched the same section-gating block, as its PR body warned: - factory.rs keeps the `helpers::add_memory_prompt_sections` call; tinyhumansai#6045's ungating of the read side moves inside that helper, so `MemoryAccessSection` no longer consults `learning.enabled` and keeps main's `[memory_access]` log prefix. `config` is then unused and leaves the signature. - helpers.rs carries both additions: tinyhumansai#6045's `bind_session_memory` and this branch's `add_memory_prompt_sections`. - The tinyhumansai#6048 builder tests move to `builder_tests_part_03_tests.rs`; tinyhumansai#6045 added a test to part_01, which put it at 759 lines against the 750-line gate. - Coverage matrix keeps rows 8.4.7-8.4.9 (tinyhumansai#6040) and 8.4.10 (tinyhumansai#6048), the latter re-pointed at part_03.

Summary
## Relevant memory for this messageblock on the user message before the model answers, with no tool call.learning.enabled, and extends it with "never say something is not stored unless a retrieval you just ran returned nothing".memory_recallno longer requiresnamespace; the default scope is searched when it is omitted.[subsystems.memory.hooks] auto_recall/OPENHUMAN_MEMORY_HOOKS_AUTO_RECALL(declared before this PR, read by nothing). No new config, RPC, schema or module-contract change.Problem
With
learning.enabled = false(the default, and no Settings toggle exists), "who is my idol and why?" answered "i don't have that one stored" while the same fact was retrieved a minute earlier when the user happened to say "as per the memory ingested". Nothing in the turn looked at user facts before the model answered — the broad per-turn recall was removed for cost (core_turn.rsdocuments why) and only preferences survived — the one instruction telling the model to retrieve first was gated on the learning subsystem, and nothing forbade asserting absence unsearched. The sub-agent fast path (#4677) also skips entity-less queries, so this exact phrasing was the expensive case even when the model did decide to search. Full mechanism withfile:linein #6040.Solution
memory/auto_recall/: a lexical gate (first-person ownership and a question/request shape — zero cost on closed turns; 63-message fixture pins ≥ 90 % both ways, currently 100 %), onefast_retrievethrough the session binding's guard (scope narrowing and the recall budget apply exactly as for the memory tools), a relative score floor (retrieval scores are declared non-comparable across drivers), ≤ 3 hits × 400 chars, the guard'srecall_max_chars, and a 5 s budget after which the turn proceeds without a block. Every failure — driver without the retrieval family, retrieval error, timeout — is an ordinary turn plus one[auto_recall]log line.turn/recall_lanes.rs: Lane B moved out ofcore_turn.rsunchanged (that file was 7 lines from the 750-line gate); Lanes B and C run withtokio::join!, so a turn pays the slower lookup, not the sum.auto_recall/warm.rs+modules/boot.rs: the warm-up, spawned only when the lane is on, bounded at 60 s, failure logged at debug.memory_host.rs:elapsed_msdebug lines on theembedandextract_spacyhost callbacks, so the lookup's split is visible in the field.scoring.embed_textbut costs an embed per candidate turn — deferred until real gate logs justify it); an about-me turn pays the module's own retrieval cost (1.5–3 s warm on the desktop) before the model starts.Submission Checklist
