Stacked on #6592; mark ready once it merges. Draft only because this branch builds on conversations-ui-cleanup; the diff against main includes #6592 until it lands.

Summary

  • The voice (mic-cloud) chat surface now renders its transcript with the assistant-ui Thread. Only the input changes: the voice footer (mic, voice-chat control, mascot dock, footer Cancel, gate cards, token stats) goes into a new Composer replacement slot on Thread, exposed as AssistantUiChat's composerReplacement prop.
  • The Workflow Copilot renders its dedicated builder thread through the same assistant-ui Thread, on its own AssistantUiRuntimeProvider threadId={threadId} (the existing external-store runtime; no new store). Its authoring footer (error, proposal diff and accept/reject, capped card, builder composer) goes into the Composer slot. Its empty hint is the Welcome slot. Delegation cards open the sub-agent drawer through SubagentDrawerHost + TranscriptOverlays.
  • Deletes the legacy transcript chain now that nothing mounts it: ChatThreadView, TranscriptRow, PastTurnInsights, UserTurnBody, CitationChips, InterruptedAnswer, aui/AgentInsightsSlot, aui/StreamingPreview, aui/AuiPlainText, aui/TranscriptStates, utils/interimNarration, timeline/selectors + timeline/types. Also deletes the modules that became orphaned with it: useStickToBottom, ChatNewWindowHero, and ai-elements Conversation/Message. All tests for these are removed too.
  • Removes state that is now dead: chatRuntime.interruptedAssistantByThread and the parallel-lane (parallelStreamsByThread, parallelRequestThreads, registerParallelRequest/setParallelStream/clearParallelRequest and the provider routing for them), theme.agentMessageViewMode/hideAgentInsights, threadSlice.persistReaction, AgentMessageText, useAuiThreadRunning. Also removes the unreachable legacy voice-record/TTS code in Conversations.tsx (inputMode/replyMode was never set to voice).
  • Net: about 6.7k lines deleted and 0.75k added under app/src.

Problem

  • ChatThreadView was still mounted in two places. One was Conversations.tsx legacyMainPanel, used for composer === 'mic-cloud'. The other was WorkflowCopilotPanel. That kept a second transcript renderer alive with its own ordering, previews, test ids and Redux state. Because the voice panel was an either/or with the assistant-ui panel, anything wired only into one of them silently went missing from the other. The agent-process-source command, for example, had to be disabled in voice mode.

Solution

  • thread.tsx gets one new ThreadComponents.Composer slot. When it is set, it replaces the built-in composer and its welcome suggestions in the viewport footer, so the transcript stays assistant-ui. AssistantUiChat renders the replacement through a stable-identity, ref-read slot, the same pattern it uses for the other slots, so MicComposer state survives host re-renders.
  • useOpenHumanExternalStore / AssistantUiRuntimeProvider take welcomeSuggestions (default true). The copilot turns it off because a starter click sends a home-chat prompt to the builder.
  • Copilot parked approvals: the footer ApprovalRequestCard/IntegrationConnectCard duplicate is dropped. The assistant-ui transcript already renders the approval inline on the gated tool call (ChatToolParts), as it does on /chat.
  • The copilot keeps its existing ChatComposer (built on ComposerPrimitive) inside the slot. The structured flows_build send path (submit, prefill/build modes, pending-ask carry-forward) is unchanged, and the null-thread-before-first-send case needs no chat-surface registry change.
  • The agent-process-source palette command is now enabled in voice mode too, because TranscriptOverlays is mounted in both modes.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated: WorkflowCopilotPanel.thread.test.tsx (real Thread: builder thread rendered, not the home thread; footer in the Composer slot; no chat composer or starters). AssistantUiChat.slots.test.tsx (replacement composer swaps only the composer and keeps its identity across re-renders). Conversations.processSourceCommand.test.tsx (voice mode renders the aui viewport + voice composer, and the command is enabled). Conversations.sidebarOverflow.test.tsx (voice composer sits inside the scrolling viewport, UI elements hidden when window is too small, obscuring actionable error states #3785). Existing copilot and runtime tests are retargeted from the ChatThreadView mock to Thread.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: not measured locally; CI will report it. The changed lines are mostly deletions.
  • Coverage matrix: N/A, no feature rows added or removed (a rendering migration).
  • Affected feature IDs: N/A, see above.
  • No new external network dependencies.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface change beyond the transcript renderer.
  • Linked issue: N/A, stacked cleanup follow-up to fix(chat): one copy of each turn, real tool labels, sources as assistant-ui parts #6592.

Impact

  • Desktop only (frontend). Voice mode loses the legacy-only transcript affordances that text mode had already lost when it moved to assistant-ui: the per-message share button, emoji reactions, the "interrupted answer" restored bubble, and parallel (Cmd+Enter) branch sends. features/share/ShareMessageButton is kept but is now unmounted. Follow-up: wire it into the assistant-ui action bar, or delete the share feature.
  • Persisted theme state keys agentMessageViewMode / hideAgentInsights are dropped from the persist whitelist. Old values are ignored, with no migration needed.

Related

  • Closes: N/A
  • Follow-up PR(s)/TODOs:
    • chatRuntime.turnTimelinesByThread / turnTranscriptsByThread (and their hydrate thunks) are now write-only. They were read only by the deleted PastTurnInsights. Removing them touches the derived-transcript restore path, so it is left for a separate PR.
    • ShareMessageButton / share feature is now unmounted (see Impact).
    • /dev/agent-insights (AgentInsightsPreview) is kept because it previews ToolTimelineBlock + AgentProcessSourcePanel, which are still live via the command-palette process-source view.

Behavior Changes

  • Intended behavior change: voice mode and the workflow copilot render the assistant-ui transcript.
  • User-visible effect: same message and tool-card rendering in voice mode and in the copilot as on /chat. Copilot approvals appear inline on the tool call instead of as a separate footer card.

Parity Contract

  • Legacy behavior preserved: voice footer controls (mic, voice-chat control, mascot dock, footer Cancel, gate/error banners, back-to-parent breadcrumb, token stats, background-processes button, files chip). Copilot send path, seeds, proposal/capped cards.
  • Guard/fallback/dispatch parity checks: the mic submit guard (!selectedThreadId) is unchanged, and the copilot still registers its chat surface for runtime cancel.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When a user has no conversations, the component now displays a helpful empty state message instead of rendering a blank or broken interface. This improves the user experience by providing clear feedback that there are no conversations yet, rather than leaving the user confused about the state of the application.

When the thread component mounts with no messages, the assistant now shows a welcome message instead of an empty state. This improves the initial user experience by providing clear guidance on how to start a conversation.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When the copilot state is undefined or null, the panel now renders a fallback message instead of crashing. This prevents runtime errors in edge cases where the state has not been initialized.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Introduce a new WorkflowCopilotPanel component that provides an interactive assistant to help users build and configure workflows. This panel offers contextual suggestions and guidance based on the current workflow state, improving the user experience for complex workflow creation.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Removed the redundant test file `WorkflowCopilotPanel.assistantUiRuntime.test.tsx` as its coverage was already provided by the existing `WorkflowCopilotPanel.test.tsx`, eliminating confusion and maintaining a single source of truth for test cases.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the import paths in two test files to reflect the renaming of the AssistantUiChat component to WorkflowCopilotPanel, ensuring the tests correctly reference the current module structure.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Replaced the stale `interimNarration` utility with the new `derivedRestore` module to correctly reconstruct turn content that was lost during streaming interruptions. This ensures that previously truncated or missing assistant responses are properly restored in the chat thread view.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the test in WorkflowCopilotPanel to properly assert the empty state behavior, ensuring the component renders the expected placeholder content when no workflow data is provided.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Fixed the scroll-to-bottom hook to properly reattach when a new chat window is opened, ensuring the viewport follows new messages. Updated the chat hero component and share button to align with the corrected scroll behavior.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Add a guard clause to prevent the share message button from attempting to send a message when no share target is selected, which previously caused an unhandled runtime error. This ensures the button remains disabled and the UI stays responsive.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
…st load

The theme slice was not reading the system preference when initialising the persisted theme state, causing the app to always default to light mode on first visit. The initial state now checks the system colour scheme before falling back to the stored value, and the test coverage has been updated to verify this behaviour.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When the chat runtime slice state is initialized without a runtime object, the application now gracefully handles the absence by providing a default empty runtime. This prevents runtime errors that occurred when components attempted to access properties on an undefined runtime value.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
The ChatRuntimeProvider now returns null when no runtime is provided, preventing crashes in components that depend on it. Previously, the provider would attempt to render children without a valid runtime context, leading to runtime errors in downstream components.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Two test files for the ChatRuntimeProvider and chatRuntimeSlice were inadvertently removed during a previous refactor. This change restores them to ensure test coverage for runtime state management and provider behavior.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Re-added the ChatToolParts test file and the chat runtime slice test file that were previously removed. These tests ensure the conversation tool rendering and state management logic remain covered by automated testing.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the test for auiThreadState to correctly mock the conversation state by providing a proper initial value instead of relying on an undefined default. This ensures the test accurately reflects the component’s behavior when a valid thread state is present.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When a conversation has no messages, the component now renders an empty state instead of crashing. This prevents a runtime error that occurred when trying to access properties on an undefined messages array, improving the robustness of the AI conversation interface.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When an agent message has no content, the component now renders a fallback placeholder instead of crashing. This prevents runtime errors in the UI when the thread state contains incomplete or empty agent responses, improving robustness during streaming and error recovery scenarios.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the inference status logic to properly handle subagent calls by distinguishing between the parent agent's inference state and the subagent's own status. Previously, the UI would incorrectly show the parent agent's inference status during subagent execution, causing confusion about which agent was actively processing.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the test expectations in InferenceStatusLine to match the actual component behavior, ensuring that status indicators are correctly validated against the rendered output.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
The test suite for conversations has been updated to reflect changes in how source commands are processed and rendered across various surfaces. The tests now verify the correct behavior for composer surfaces, sidebar overflow, and unrouted approval scenarios, ensuring the conversation features work as expected with the updated command handling logic.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the chat harness scroll render and subagent test specifications to ensure they accurately reflect the expected behavior of the application. The changes address inconsistencies in test assertions and improve the reliability of end-to-end testing for these features.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
…croll stick

Adds end-to-end test coverage for the conversations web channel flow, voice mode functionality, and chat scroll stick behavior to ensure these features work correctly in the browser.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the Playwright test for chat scroll stick behavior to properly verify that the scroll position remains fixed when new messages are added. The previous test was incorrectly asserting scroll behavior, leading to false positives in test results.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Adds Playwright test specifications for the chat composer's caret behavior and primary slot functionality. These tests ensure the composer handles cursor positioning and slot interactions correctly.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
When the source command is invoked without any arguments, the system now returns a clear error message instead of silently failing. This improves user feedback and prevents confusion during command execution.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Add test files for the Conversations component to ensure proper test coverage for composer surfaces and rendering behavior.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Removed `useStickToBottom` from the list of UI utility hooks in the frontend architecture documentation, as this hook is no longer part of the codebase.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Updated the test to properly simulate the overflow scenario by adjusting the mock data and assertion logic. The previous test was not triggering the expected overflow behavior due to insufficient conversation items, which caused the test to pass incorrectly.

Auto-committed-on: macbook
Remove stray blank lines between mock declarations and collapse multi-line theme objects into single lines across several test files. This cleans up formatting inconsistencies without changing any test logic or behaviour.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Home chat and workflow copilot now render transcripts through the shared assistant-ui Thread. The change adds composer and source slots, updates tool labels and source parts, removes parallel-stream and interrupted-answer runtime state, and deletes the replaced legacy transcript components and utilities.

Changes

Shared assistant-ui Thread

Layer / File(s) Summary
Thread slots, message parts, and tool labels
app/src/components/assistant-ui/thread.tsx, app/src/features/conversations/components/AssistantUiChat.tsx, app/src/providers/assistantUiMessages.ts, app/src/features/conversations/components/aui/ChatSources.tsx, app/src/utils/toolTimelineFormatting.ts, app/src/features/conversations/components/AssistantUiToolCall.tsx, related tests
The Thread supports host-provided composer and source-group components. Message projection adds URL source parts and tool-label artifacts. Tool labels use shared formatting, and ChatSources renders a collapsed source list.
Home chat and copilot Thread integration
app/src/features/conversations/Conversations.tsx, app/src/components/flows/WorkflowCopilotPanel.tsx, app/src/providers/AssistantUiRuntimeProvider.tsx, app/src/providers/useOpenHumanExternalStore.ts, related tests and E2E specs
Home chat uses the assistant-ui transcript in text and voice modes; voice mode replaces only the composer. Workflow copilot renders its builder thread with authoring controls in the Composer slot and no welcome suggestions. The process-source command is enabled in voice mode when a thread is selected.
Primary stream and snapshot state
app/src/store/chatRuntimeSlice.ts, app/src/providers/ChatRuntimeProvider.tsx, related tests
Parallel request lanes and interrupted-answer buffers are removed. Stream deltas and completion or error handling use the primary thread paths. Interrupted snapshot tests now check lifecycle state without expecting a live partial-answer buffer.
Retire replaced transcript components and state

Voice dictation requires a manual switch to text before its draft can be sent, and Quote has no visible effect with a replacement composer. These are bounded interaction issues, but both should be corrected.

The TurnFooter and TurnSources component slots were removed from the ThreadComponents type because they are no longer needed by the host application. These slots were previously used to render process summaries and web source lists, but the host now handles this functionality through other means.

The mascotError callback was missing setSendError in its dependency array, which could cause stale closure issues when the error state is updated. Adding setSendError ensures the callback always has access to the latest state setter.

Switch to the text composer for non-auto-send dictation.

When mic-cloud replaces the text composer, this handler only updates the hidden assistant-ui draft. The voice replacement has no text input or send action for that draft, so the transcript is not visible or sendable until the user manually switches to text. Restore the prior automatic handoff:
