feat(memory): carry everything a store holds when switching engines (#6718) - #6869
Conversation
`remove_rpc` loaded the config after the source was already gone from the registry, so a config read that failed turned a completed removal into an error, and a caller retrying it would remove nothing. The removal now stands; a record that cannot be cleared is logged and left behind, inert, since nothing syncs the source again.
`engine_migrate` copied the keyed records only, so a switch left behind document titles and tags, goals, the learned profile, every past conversation and everything ingested into the summary tree. It now runs tinymemory's `migrate::copy_all` (tinymemory#178): the records, then each family both engines serve, then the ingested content, re-sent raw so the new engine rebuilds its own summaries. - The job reports the step under way and, once finished, what each step did; a step one engine cannot serve is named rather than failed. - Re-sending content is the user's choice (`replay_content`, on by default), since hosted memory bills for what it reads again. Content the new engine refuses is reported in the note instead of holding the switch back: the old engine keeps it and its sync can bring it again. - Into hosted memory, reader-based sources (`mem_src:` ids) are left out of the replay, because the host's own sync sends them from scratch. - The module client forwards the new `EpisodicPortability` family, gated on the pinned artifact like every family after `Episodic`. - The switch dialog lists what is copied, offers the content replay with a credits note for hosted memory, names the step under way, and the panel names what the new engine could not take.
Every 30-minute rebuild recomputed every facet and wrote each one back, because decay alone moves the scores a little each cycle. On hosted memory that is several billed requests per facet per cycle to record a change no reader acts on. A rebuild now skips a facet whose fields are unchanged and whose confidence and stability moved by less than `REWRITE_TOLERANCE`. Decay is exponential in the time since `last_seen_at`, so the next cycle, computing from the older row, reaches the score a write-every-cycle would have; the tolerance only bounds how stale the stored scores read in between.
A file removed from a synced folder stayed in hosted memory, because the host's sync record dropped the item without telling the sink. The record now keeps the id the sink answered for each item, and a folder sync that no longer finds an item forgets it by that id. Only a folder's walk is the whole source: an item missing from a feed or a repository listing may just be past its window, so those stay. An empty walk is taken as a folder that could not be read, not as every file deleted, and a forget the sink refuses is retried on the next run.
Hosted memory has no model to summarise with, so `MemoryTree::summarise` answers `Unsupported` and every hosted segment was left closed with no recap. The archivist now folds such a segment with the host's own `summarization` model, over the same turns and within the same input budget, under the same deadline. The conversation already went to that provider, so no new kind of data leaves the device.

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The memory migration, folder sync and recap changes have several correctness gaps. An empty folder listing can lose track of files that were later deleted. Recap generation can run well past its time bound or send oversized input. Learning facets can be rewritten without new evidence. Conversation history can be mapped to the wrong turn during migration. Failed content replay may not be shown after a switch. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Switching engines now transfers substantially more private information. Explicit destination selection and failure checks limit the risk, but cancellation and failed copies do not establish what happens to information already transferred. Retained concerns

verify stability and lifecycle state remain consistent across evidence-free

Review comments at @crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/sources/hosted_sync.rs:

Prevent remapped turn IDs from colliding with later source turns.
import_turns checks existing records for incoming IDs, then assigns next_turn_id() when an ID conflicts. It does not reserve that new ID against the remaining source records. If a later source turn has the generated ID, both turns are written under the same key, and the migration can map segment or event references to the wrong turn. Allocate remapped IDs outside both the destination’s existing IDs and the full source ID set. (github.com)

Valid, within one batch. Earlier batches are already seen by later ones, because each batch waits for its last write. Fixed in tinyhumansai/tinymemory#179: the batch reserves every id it carries, so a fresh id skips them, and it records what it writes so a later turn under that id is compared with the write. The new test fails without the fix. It is in the host-linked tinymemory-remote crate, so it reaches OpenHuman with tinymemory's next release and re-pin.

@YellowSnnowmann, thanks for clarifying. The collision risk is within one batch; later batches see earlier writes because each batch waits for its last write.
The fix in tinyhumansai/tinymemory#179 addresses that risk. This OpenHuman finding remains open until the release and re-pin include the fix.

Learning: In tinymemory's host-linked Rust crate `tinymemory-remote`, `import_turns` batches wait for their last write before the next batch runs. Later batches therefore see earlier writes. Review remapped turn-ID collisions against all incoming IDs within the current batch, not against unseen records from earlier batches.

Re the Tiny Sweeper findings:
|
…hoice Review follow-ups on #6869: - A finished copy may report content the new engine refused (the content step does not hold the switch back). The panel only named skipped steps, and `finishSwitch` cleared the job, so the refusal was never shown. The completion notice now also counts refused content. - The content re-send choice was not stored with the running job, so a migration resumed after leaving the panel reported intentionally skipped content as left behind. The choice is stored with the job and restored on resume; a job stored before the choice existed re-sent content. - The step progress line now says what its count measures, in every locale.
Review follow-ups on #6869: - The host fold got a fresh `RECAP_DEADLINE` after the driver's fold answered `Unsupported`, so a late answer could hold the turn for nearly twice the bound. Both folds now share one deadline set before the first. - A newest turn longer than the whole input budget was sent whole. It is now cut at a character boundary, so the transcript never exceeds the budget.
Skipping rows that barely moved (#6869) left `last_seen_at` at the last write, but stability counts time since the last reinforcement, which every rebuild used to refresh by writing every row. Stability therefore decayed between writes and jumped back after one, and a facet near a threshold could be demoted and re-promoted with no new evidence. The detector now keeps the previous rebuild's time in memory and reads an existing row as reinforced at that time at the latest, as the refresh would have. A test rebuilds every half hour for a week against a detector that writes every row every cycle: the lifecycle state matches at every step, and confidence and stability stay within the rewrite tolerance.
v1.21.0 ships tinymemory#178: the `EpisodicPortability` family (contract 4.3), served by the module through `ExportEpisodic` and `ImportEpisodic`. The registry record, the 11 asset digests (from the release's checksum.toml), the 7 CI pins and the vendor gitlink move to the tag, and the family joins the advertised list beside the forwarder #6869 added.
