fix(memory): learn returns on accept; time every engine call - #7035
Conversation
The agent's `memory` tool stored learnings with the default WaitFor::Visible, so a turn waited for the hosted engine to list and rank the write (95 s measured; the model calls took ~8 s). It now stores with WriteOptions::accepted and tells the model the learning is saved and searchable shortly. memory_learn RPC, flows and imports keep read-after-write. The host's engine guard now logs one `[memory:timing]` debug line per engine call (op, engine, elapsed_ms, outcome, count; no content), and the post_turn hook logs elapsed_ms. Tiny Sweeper reviewTiny Sweeper reviewed this change across 6 lane(s) and found 0 active actionable finding(s). All lanes report the change looks safe to merge; the e2e lane is waiting on end-to-end jobs (`Rust E2E (mock backend)`, `Build Playwright E2E Artifact`, `E2E (Playwright / web lane)`, `Desktop E2E (full suite, 3 OS)`). Review lanes noted that code retrieval was unavailable, so they saw the diff alone, and memory retrieval was also unavailable. The change makes the agent's `learn` tool return once the write is accepted instead of waiting for indexing, keeps the RPC path reading its own write back, and adds per-call timing debug logging across the scrubbing engine wrapper and the post-turn hook. Diff coverage was 75%: the outcome/count expressions and post_turn's elapsed_ms lived inside tracing macro fields, which only run under a DEBUG subscriber. Compute them first, and drive every guarded method once in a pass-through test.

Over JSON-RPC against the mock backend's /memory proxy: the agent tool's learn makes its experience POST the last memory call (no visibility reads), carries the receipt id and the 'searchable shortly' status, and the learning lists shortly after. memory_learn over RPC is the control: it still reads its write back before returning.

The agent learn must make exactly one experience write with nothing after it; the RPC control must read the store back (GET /memory/events) after its write. A read before the write is the engine's replay lookup.
Summary
memorytoollearnaction now stores withWriteOptions::accepted()instead of the defaultWaitFor::Visible, so a chat turn no longer waits for the hosted engine to list and rank the learning.{"id": …, "status": "saved; searchable in recall shortly"}); it keeps the receipt id.memory/guard.rs, which wraps every bound engine) now emits one[memory:timing]debug line per engine call:op,engine,elapsed_ms,outcome(okor the stable error code),count. No user content. The post_turn hook log gainselapsed_ms.Problem
memorylearncall took 95 s ([memory:tool] dispatch action=learnat 20:53:18 →[memory:ops] item stored engine=tinyhumans kind="learning"at 20:54:53). The turn's three model calls took about 8 s together, and the final answer waited on the write.ops::learn → store_item → engine.store(item)uses tinymemory's defaultWaitFor::Visible. The cortex engine then polls until the write is listed (up to 30 s) and settled in ranked recall (up to 10 s), with backoff. The hosted API does not forward?wait=indexed, so all of that is client polling. Turn writes already usedWriteOptions::accepted(); learn did not.Solution
MemoryEngine::store_with(item, WriteOptions::accepted())already exists, and cortex's Accepted path skips?wait=indexedand the visibility waits. It returns once the events are captured (a replay lookup and the write).ops::learn_with/ops::store_on_withtake aWriteOptions.ops::learn/ops::store_onkeepvisible(), so every other caller behaves exactly as before. Only the agent tool passesaccepted().INSUFFICIENT_CREDITS). Nothing is fire-and-forget, so no error is lost.engine.rsbinds all three engine sources throughScrubbingEngine::wrap). That covers ops, the pre/post-turn hooks (AgentMemory), Brain, imports and source syncs without per-call-site code.Deliberately left on
WaitFor::Visible(they need read-after-write and none blocks an openhuman chat turn):memory_learnRPC (Settings → Learnings). Note: the MCP server exposes this same RPC (mcp/server/tools/specs.rs:165), so an external MCP client callingmemory_learnstill waits the full Visible time.flows::remember_keyed(theflow_memory_remembertool and tinyflowsremembernodes). These run only inside trusted Workflow runs, and a later run reads its own keys.store_item/store_oncallers: flow run digests, source syncs (memory/sources/sync.rs), and Composio record stores.store_many: v1 import and conversation backfill (Settings / background).pre_turn_timeout_ms) and Brain ingest.Submission Checklist
