Summary

  • Adds memory::billing::free_period_active(config) -> bool: the one check every background memory job asks before it starts on its own, i.e. whether memory work is free for the user right now.
  • The answer is used by the CortexDB layout migration (old app:tinymemory tree → per-user v3) and by the v1 local-store import. Both rewrite a user's whole memory, so per the user's decision they auto-start only while it costs the user nothing.
  • How it decides:
    • Not the hosted engine (self-hosted CortexDB, or a host's own engine): always free here.
    • Hosted tinyhumans engine: free only while the backend's memory free period is on (GET /memory/free-period).
    • Anything unknown (memory off, signed out, no transport, an error, a backend without the route): not free.

Problem

  • Re-storing all of a user's memory on the hosted engine is billed per write and derivation. An automatic migration outside the free period would spend the user's credits without asking, and a low balance would hit 402 part-way through.
  • The backend's free period (tinyhumansai/backend#1402) was invisible to clients.

Solution

  • The backend now exposes it: tinyhumansai/backend#1408 (GET /memory/free-period → {active, until}, budget figures kept private).
  • The core asks through the existing backend transport: BackendClient::authed_json, the credential from resolve_backend_credential, and errors through flatten_authed_error. No request is hand-built.
  • The answer, failures included, is cached for 60 s per backend URL, so a job polling between batches costs about one request a minute, and a backend without the route is asked once a minute, not once a batch.
  • Dependency chain (none of it blocks this PR):
    1. backend#1408: until it deploys, the call answers 404, which this check reads as not free. So nothing auto-runs, which is the safe default.
    2. feat(memory): read whether hosted memory is free right now sdk#49: adds the route to the SDK contract. The vendored SDK's route policy (vendor/tinyhumans-sdk @ 870c0d3, reject_unexposed_route) is a denylist (UNEXPOSED_ROUTES plus admin, internal and undocumented-webhook segments), so /memory/free-period already passes the transport today. The SDK bump keeps the contract in step and can follow the normal release → vendor/tinyhumans-sdk gitlink bump.
    3. Consumers: the layout migration job (OH-1, next) and W5's v1 import call this function. Neither is in this PR.

Submission Checklist

  • Tests added or updated: 10 unit tests in memory/billing_tests.rs.
    • Parsing; the cache (TTL, per-backend key, failures cached).
    • Memory off → not free; a non-hosted engine → free.
    • wiremock through the real BackendClient path: on, off, and a 404 → not free.
    • The hosted engine end to end, asking the backend once.
    • Revert-check: short-circuiting the hosted branch makes the end-to-end test fail.
  • Diff coverage ≥ 80%: every branch of the new module is exercised by those tests.
  • Coverage matrix updated: N/A, an internal helper with no user-facing feature row yet. The consumer PRs add rows.
  • Affected feature IDs listed: N/A, no matrix feature changes here.
  • No new external network dependencies: tests use wiremock on loopback.
  • Manual smoke checklist: N/A, no release-cut surface.
  • Linked issue: N/A, this is the openhuman half of the user's billing decision (a) for the layout migration.

Impact

  • Core only; no UI. One cached GET to the hosted backend, made only when a consumer asks.
  • Security: rides the authenticated backend transport. The backend route exposes no budget figures.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Memory usage is treated as free when a non-TinyHumans engine is selected or when the TinyHumans service reports an active free period.
    • Free-period status is reused for up to 60 seconds to reduce repeated checks. If the status cannot be confirmed, memory usage is treated as not free.
    • Checks use the configured service and account credentials, so free-period status reflects the relevant backend and account.

Background memory jobs that write a user's whole memory again (the
CortexDB layout migration, the v1 import) should start on their own only
when that costs nothing. memory::billing::free_period_active answers it:
an engine other than the hosted one is always free; the hosted engine is
free while the backend's memory free period is on (GET /memory/free-period
through the backend transport, cached a minute per backend); anything
unknown (memory off, signed out, an error, a backend without the route)
reads as not free.

Tiny Sweeper review

Tiny Sweeper reviewed this change across 6 lane(s) and found 3 active actionable finding(s), all in one lane. The change adds a memory billing free-period check that background memory jobs consult before starting on their own; earlier findings about sensitive error logging and fetch-time timestamping are fixed in this revision. Detailed lane evidence and any incomplete work are listed below.

What changed

The review could not produce a supported behavioral summary; inspect the cited changed surface and lane details below.

Features

  • Added — Memory billing free-period check with per-backend, per-account cached answer, fetch-time timestamping, and envelope-tolerant parsing: Background memory jobs that rewrite a user's memory start on their own only when the work is free: non-hosted engines are always free here, the hosted tinyhumans engine asks the backend's /memory/free-period route through the backend transport, and anything unknown (memory off, signed out, no transport, an error, a backend without the route) reads as not free so nothing starts on its own. The answer is cached for 60 seconds, keyed by both the bound engine's backend endpoint and a full SHA-256 digest of the account credential so one account's answer never serves another. The cache is guarded by one async lock covering lookup and fetch, so concurrent callers wait for one request rather than each sending their own. The timestamp used for TTL expiry is read after the fetch completes, so an answer's age starts when it arrives, not when it was asked for. Backend errors are logged without the error text (which can carry the backend's response), and the parser reads `active` whether or not the response still carries the `{success, data}` envelope. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing.rs, crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/mod.rs)

Tests

  • unit — Parses the free-period answer: reads the boolean `active` flag, refuses anything else, and reads an answer still in its `{success, data}` envelope the same way.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — An answer is reused within the TTL and asked again after it goes stale.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — An answer's freshness is timed from when it arrives, not when it was asked for: a fetch that finishes after the TTL still yields an answer that stays fresh for a full TTL.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — An error reads as not free and is cached too, so a backend without the route is asked once a minute rather than once a batch.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — Each backend keeps its own cached answer; one backend's answer is not reused for another.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — Concurrent callers share one request because the single async mutex serializes misses.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — Memory off reads as not free, and an engine other than the hosted one is always free.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • unit — Each account keeps its own answer: two different stored credentials against the same backend each trigger their own backend request.: Present; each test would fail on regression. (crates/openhuman-core/src/memory/billing_tests.rs)
  • 2 additional supported test mapping(s) omitted by the configured limit.

Findings

  • medium · security · Keep unit tests off real network sockets — These module unit tests start a TCP mock server and exercise `BackendClient` over HTTP. The repository rules prohibit real network access in unit tests, even when the peer is a loc (crates/openhuman\-core/src/memory/billing\_tests\.rs:162)
  • medium · security · Exercise the free-period gate through a memory job — The tests verify `free_period_active` directly, but none drives the memory operation that is supposed to use this gate. A regression could leave the helper correct while an automat (crates/openhuman\-core/src/memory/billing\_tests\.rs:142)
  • medium · tests · Add an end-to-end test for the gated memory job path — The unit tests here thoroughly pin `free_period_active` itself, but the stated contract is behavioural: background memory jobs must not self-start unless this gate returns true. No (crates/openhuman\-core/src/memory/billing\.rs:49)

  • Conclusion: Success

  • Lane summary: The billing cache, credential isolation, response parsing, and error handling fixes from earlier reviews are present. tests

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The billing gate is now real, tested code: the module exists, the nested payload is parsed, cache keys use the full credential digest, errors are not logged and are cached, and the tests cover TTL, per-backend and per-account isolation, concurrency, and the hosted-engine wiring through wiremock. All earlier findings on those points are resolved. The one remaining concern from earlier revisions stands: nothing in the diff shows an end-to-end test driving a memory job through the free-period gate, so the invariant that gated jobs only self-start when this function returns true is still pinned only indirectly. (5 earlier finding(s) still open) _Code retrieval was unavailable (model: ladder embeddings returned 400 Bad Request: {"error":{"message":"unknown ladder vectors; known ladders are flash (also chat-v1, flash-v1), instant (also no-think, instant-v1), reasoning (also deepseek), max-reasoning (also max-reasoning-v1), deepseek-flash (also reasoning-v1, agentic-v1), deep (also luna), scribe, uncensored, vectors-oai3 (also embeddings-oai3-v1), vision (also vision-v1, multimodal-v1), image (also images-v1, image-v1), vi), so this review saw the diff alone._ _Memory was unavailable (model: cortex: v1/recall: error sending request for url (http://cortexdb:3141/v1/recall\)\), so this review ran without it._

description

  • Conclusion: Success
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Positive: The PR adds a cached, fail-closed free-period check for memory jobs, and the description matches the diff: the module, the per-backend/account cache, the credential digest key, and the tests covering parsing, TTL, concurrency, and wiremock-driven backend paths are all present and consistent with repo rules (sibling test file, credentials via resolve_backend_credential, no error content logged). All previously raised findings — missing module source, cache scoping to backend and account, credential digest length, error logging, fetch-time timestamping, and concurrent-miss serialization — are addressed in this revision. The remaining 'end-to-end gated job path' concern is not applicable here, as no consumer exists yet and the PR states this explicitly.

e2e

  • Conclusion: Neutral
  • Scope reviewed: all assigned evidence
  • Lane summary: The billing module now exists with full cache logic and thorough unit/integration tests; earlier findings about the missing module, envelope parsing, per-account cache keys, error logging, and timing are all fixed. What still stands is the end-to-end gap: no e2e test drives a memory job through free_period_active, so the gated auto-start path is only exercised by unit tests with a fake clock and a wiremock server, never by the running system. The cache held one entry, so asking a second backend evicted the first's
answer. It is now a map keyed by backend, behind one async lock held
across a miss, so concurrent callers wait for one request instead of
each sending their own.

…h clock

The free-period check now asks the backend memory is actually bound to
(the engine's endpoint, not config.api_url), keys its cache by that
backend and a digest of the credential so one account's answer never
serves another, and reads the clock after taking the cache lock so a wait
behind another backend's fetch cannot stretch an answer past its TTL.

The cache key kept 8 bytes of the credential's SHA-256; it now keeps all
of it, so two accounts on one backend can never share an answer.

The transport unwraps the {success, data} envelope, but an answer that
still carries it is now read the same way, and anything without a
boolean active is still an error. The tests give each config its own
API key: the answer cache is process-wide, and a mock server can reuse a
port another test's server just released.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Record the cache timestamp after the fetch completes.

active_with_cache captures now before fetch().await and stores that timestamp after the fetch. If the fetch takes at least CACHE_TTL, the next caller treats the new answer as stale and sends another backend request immediately. Record the completion time instead.

Suggested fix
     let active = match fetch().await {
         Ok(active) => active,
         Err(error) => {

A fetch slower than the TTL used to store an answer already stale; the
entry is now timed when the answer arrives. The failure log no longer
includes the error, whose text can carry the backend's response.
