Summary

This moves the host-independent skill handling that still lived in OpenHuman's core (crates/openhuman-core/src/skills/) into tinyskills, so the host keeps only roots, trust, networking, events and RPC. New modules:

  • authoring: slugify, display-name/description validation, YAML scalar quoting, WORKFLOW.md frontmatter/document rendering, and scaffold_bundle (containment, body-preserving edit, legacy-location retirement, resource directories).
  • remove: remove_bundle(roots, slug), a defensive uninstall. It validates the slug, rejects symlinked roots and aliases, checks canonical containment and requires a manifest before remove_dir_all.
  • install additions: redact_url, validate_fetched_document / check_document_size, and write_installed_document, an atomic SKILL.md write with rollback and mode 0644.
  • catalog: CatalogEntry, Hermes catalog parsing, download-URL derivation for Hermes docsPath, GitHub blob/tree, ClawHub and skills.sh, tree-listing lookup, entry lookup with closest-id suggestions, and search filtering. The network fetch and cache stay in the host.
  • trigger: TriggerPattern parse and match for domain[:slug] activation patterns.
  • discovery: CollisionPolicy / TieBreak / resolve_collisions_with / discover_with. A host can now choose last-writer-wins ties, exclude scopes and set the id noun. The defaults reproduce resolve_collisions exactly.
  • document: a public read_document, a bounded read that rejects symlinks and requires UTF-8, for host sidecar reads.
  • model: the format constants (SKILL_MD, WORKFLOW_MD, MAX_*, RESOURCE_DIRS, ...) are now public, and there is a new Skill::id().
  • resource: read_resource rejects a symlink at any path component on every platform, not only through openat(NOFOLLOW) on Unix.

Related issue

None. This is the upstream half of an OpenHuman core-to-submodule migration; the host PR follows and pins this commit.

API or behavior changes

All additions except these two:

  • read_resource now reports an intermediate symlink as ResourceError::Symlink on all platforms. Before, Unix reported an I/O error from openat and other platforms followed the link. ResourceError::Escapes is no longer produced, but it is kept so existing matches still compile.
  • resolve_collisions / discover behaviour is unchanged. The new policy is opt-in.

Nothing is breaking.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: clean
  • cargo build --all-targets --all-features: ok
  • cargo test --all-features: all suites pass
  • cargo llvm-cov + .github/scripts/check-file-coverage.sh 90: every source file is at 90% or above

Tests

New integration suites: tests/authoring.rs, catalog.rs, collisions.rs, documents.rs, fetched_documents.rs, remove.rs, resource_symlinks.rs, trigger.rs. Most are ported from OpenHuman core's own tests for the moved code, with the same assertions. The rest cover the new error paths and policies.

Two cases are deliberately untested:

  • The non-Unix open_resource branch, since no Windows runner is available locally.
  • The race-only canonical-escape guard in remove_bundle.

Documentation

README.md capabilities and the AGENTS.md structure block list the new modules. Every public item has rustdoc.

Checklist

  • The change is focused on one logical change (moving host-independent skill logic into the library)
  • No new #[allow(...)], #[ignore], or relaxed lints
  • No secrets, tokens, or .env contents in the diff or the description

…ery support

Introduce a new catalog module that provides the core data structures and operations for managing skill entries, including downloading remote catalogs, parsing catalog data, and querying entries by name or tag. This change establishes the foundation for skill discovery and retrieval in the tinyskills tool.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When the catalog path is an empty string, the catalog module now returns an error instead of silently treating it as a valid path. This prevents confusing behavior where an empty path would be interpreted as the current working directory.

Introduce a catalog module with query and parsing capabilities, enabling structured access to skill metadata. This includes a query builder for filtering and sorting, a parser for reading catalog files, and integration tests to validate the functionality. The change extends the library's public API and improves maintainability by centralizing catalog operations.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When a document has no skills, the rendering now produces an empty list instead of a malformed output. Previously, an empty skills array would cause the template to generate broken markup, so the change adds a guard to return a clean empty list in that case.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When a user submits a skill with an empty name, the authoring module now returns an appropriate error instead of proceeding with an invalid state. This prevents downstream issues caused by missing identifiers.

Ensure the catalog entry parser does not panic when the download directory is absent. Previously, an unwrap on the directory path caused a crash; now it returns a proper error, allowing the caller to handle the missing directory gracefully.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly

When a skill has no triggers configured, the execution now returns early instead of attempting to iterate over an empty list, preventing a potential panic or unexpected behavior.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When the discovery process returns no skills, the output now shows a clear message indicating that no skills were found rather than displaying an empty or malformed result. This improves user experience by providing explicit feedback instead of leaving the user uncertain about the outcome.

Fixed a typo in the module-level documentation comment to ensure clarity and accuracy for readers.

When the configuration directory does not exist, the installer now creates it automatically instead of failing with an error. This improves the setup experience for first-time users who may not have the directory structure in place.

Reformat long assertion expressions in the authoring and remove test files to use multi-line formatting, improving code readability without changing any test logic. Remove an unused import of `std::path::Path` from the authoring test file.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Renamed the test function from `failed_writes_roll_back_the_new_directory` to `create_dir_failure_is_reported_as_typed_error` to accurately describe that the test verifies a typed error is returned when directory creation fails, rather than testing rollback behavior.

…ADME.md

Update the module tree in AGENTS.md to reflect the addition of authoring, remove, and trigger modules, along with their corresponding test files. Extend the README.md feature list to describe the new capabilities including collision policies, authoring utilities, defensive bundle removal, fetched-document validation, trigger pattern matching, and safe document reads.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
Wrap the two occurrences of "ClawHub" in backticks so the doc comment renders the name as inline code rather than plain prose, matching the style used for other identifiers in the test file.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
When the remove function receives an empty input, it now returns immediately without attempting any processing. This prevents a potential panic or unnecessary work on empty data, making the function more robust and predictable.

Auto-committed-on: dragonfly
Co-authored-by: Medulla <medulla@tinyhumans.ai>
The test for removing a skill was incorrectly asserting that the skill should remain after removal, which contradicted the intended behavior. The assertion has been updated to verify that the skill is properly removed from the collection.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The crate adds public APIs for catalog parsing and search, bundle authoring, fetched-document validation and installation, bundle removal, configurable discovery collisions, trigger matching, and bounded document and resource access. It also expands public exports, documentation, and integration tests.

Changes

Crate capabilities

Layer / File(s) Summary
Public API surface
AGENTS.md, README.md, crates/tinyskills/src/lib.rs
The crate exports the added APIs and documents the expanded modules, capabilities, and tests.
Catalog parsing, lookup, and download resolution
crates/tinyskills/src/catalog/*, crates/tinyskills/tests/catalog.rs
The catalog API defines entries, parses Hermes data, derives download URLs, locates skills in repository trees, and supports search, filtering, and lookup errors. Tests cover parsing, URL resolution, and query behavior.
Bounded document reads and resource symlink checks
crates/tinyskills/src/model.rs, crates/tinyskills/src/document.rs, crates/tinyskills/src/resource.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/documents.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/resource_symlinks.rs
Document limits and filename constants become public, and Skill::id is added. Document reads are bounded, and resource reads reject symlinked path components.
Fetched-document validation and installation
crates/tinyskills/src/install.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/fetched_documents.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/documents.rs
Fetched documents are size-checked, decoded, parsed, and checked for required fields and a safe slug. Installation validates target paths and writes through a temporary file before renaming.
Bundle authoring and scaffolding
crates/tinyskills/src/authoring.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/authoring.rs
Authoring APIs validate metadata and slugs, render frontmatter, and create or edit bundle directories. Edits preserve parsed document bodies and can locate bundles under legacy roots.
Defensive bundle removal
crates/tinyskills/src/remove.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/remove.rs
remove_bundle validates bundle names and paths, checks bundle documents and symlinks, and removes the selected bundle.
Configurable discovery collisions
crates/tinyskills/src/discovery.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/collisions.rs
Discovery and collision resolution accept policies for tie-breaking, excluded scopes, and warning labels.
Trigger-pattern parsing and matching
crates/tinyskills/src/trigger.rs, crates/tinyskills/tests/trigger.rs
TriggerPattern parses domain and optional slug values and matches them case-insensitively.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 08ca8

Editing a bundle whose WORKFLOW.md cannot be parsed can silently replace its body with SKILL.md's body and then delete SKILL.md, losing hand-written content. Catalog entries with unusual GitHub source URLs can resolve to the wrong file. Concurrent installs of the same skill can interfere with each other. The body-loss issue should be fixed before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 08ca8

The new lifecycle APIs have concrete containment and commit-semantics weaknesses. Bundle editing can follow a manifest symlink outside the bundle, and competing installations can interfere with each other’s document publication. Actual exposure depends on the embedding application’s trust checks, filesystem permissions and concurrency policy; remote exploitation is not established.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: The authoring API checks the bundle directory but does not protect the selected manifest write. During overwrite, a symlinked WORKFLOW.md can fail parsing while a regular SKILL.md supplies the preserved body; fs::write then follows the WORKFLOW.md symlink and can truncate or replace a file outside the bundle using the embedding process’s authority. This requires an attacker-prepared bundle and a host-authorized edit, not merely control of the slug. The directory-symlink test does not cover this path. The newly exposed library contract contains this weakness; whether it also existed in the former host implementation is unresolved.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The installation contract promises atomic publication and an existing document that is never overwritten, but it does not reserve ownership of a slug. Concurrent callers can both pass the absent-target check, reuse SKILL.md.tmp and write the same temporary inode. One caller can publish bytes supplied or still being modified by another, so instruction integrity and publication atomicity do not hold for competing installs. Sequential idempotency is demonstrated; concurrent host reachability is not. This affects the new public writer contract, with historical host behavior unverified.
  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Authoring does not have a single authoritative commit state. It truncates the selected document directly, ignores alternate-document retirement failures and creates resource directories afterward. An interruption can expose a partial document; an error can occur after the edit is visible; and an unsuccessful WORKFLOW.md retirement can leave an old document shadowing a new SKILL.md despite success. Hosts own trust-related sidecars, cache invalidation and notifications, so these outcomes require explicit reconciliation rather than treating success or failure as an unambiguous state transition. Whether the former host had equivalent behavior is unresolved.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The strongest supported write-path exposure is the embedding process’s filesystem authority. A prepared manifest symlink can redirect an authorized edit beyond the selected bundle. Competing installs affect the same root and slug. No verified production caller establishes tenant-wide, service-wide, credential or environment exposure.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The authoring attack path requires control of a bundle’s selected manifest symlink, a parseable alternate manifest, a host-authorized overwrite and write permission on the symlink destination. Read-time symlink rejection does not terminate this path because parsing falls back to the alternate document before the selected path is written.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Catalog derivation is not network authorization. Most derivations constrain origins or path components, while download_base_override remains caller-controlled. Separate install validators check URL policy and resolved addresses, but their use by a downstream fetcher is unverified. Tree matching rejects incomplete or ambiguous selection without authenticating the listing’s producer.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Instruction publication and host-owned sidecar, cache and notification state can diverge when an edit becomes visible before an error, alternate-document retirement fails, or competing installers share a temporary file. The inspected library does not provide a transaction spanning those responsibilities; actual host reconciliation remains unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define a consistent lifecycle commit protocol: pin directory identity, prevent symlink-following writes, establish exclusive per-slug ownership, publish from independently owned temporary files and expose committed versus incomplete outcomes that hosts can reconcile after interruption.
  • proposed — Make the embedding-host integration contract explicit: URL candidates remain untrusted until network authorization, validated addresses must constrain the actual connection, redirects require equivalent checks, and tree-listing provenance must be established before selecting install content. This is a proposal addressing unresolved coverage, not an observed SSRF finding.
