It's the 1st of October, and the start of our annual Drawtober challenge over at [community profile] drawesome! :D

I don't think I was able to manage participating at all last year, but I'm determined to do it this time around. Sometimes it helps to keep a theme in mind or a particular direction to go in, so I'm thinking about focusing on figure drawing - gestures, line of action, musculature, that sort of thing.

Day 1's prompt was THROUGH A WINDOW. I sketched the figure from a reference photo and filled with marker:

Day 1 - Through a window

Feels like I haven't done any art in forever, so this is a good start I think! :)

One of my art goals is learning to convey movement using fewer strokes, to develop a more loose and natural figure drawing style, which I know will only come with practice. Not sure how many sketches I'll be able to do this month, but I'm hoping for around 10.

Here's the list of daily art prompts, for my own reference: Drawtober 2025 Prompts )

Title: Jim
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
Character: Jim Jimenez
Rating: G
Content Notes: For [community profile] drawesome Challenge #71 - Pride!. Digital drawing of Jim, an awesome non-binary character on Our Flag Means Death, using the non-binary flag colours yellow, white, purple and black. I was also inspired by the ceaseless fluidity and flow of the wide open ocean. :)

Feels like I haven't sat down to do any sketching in MONTHS. I think this must be my first fanart for 2025, and it'll be April in a couple hours. Man, where does the time go?? o_O

Title: Michael...in Spaaace!
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Fandom: Star Trek: Discovery
Character: Michael Burnham
Rating: G
Content Notes: Just under the wire with my entry for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #69: in Spaaace!. Digital drawing of Michael Burnham from Star Trek: Discovery. It was a bit of a challenge trying to get her facial features right, and I'm not sure how successful I was, but I feel like I *did* manage to capture something of her spirit. I particularly enjoyed sketching in the sparkly galaxy background. ^__^

Title: Gwen Redraw
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Character: Gwen
Fandom: Merlin (BBC)
Content Notes: Created for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #66: 10 Year Redraw. This is a redraw of Gwen from Merlin (BBC), which I'd originally done for the [livejournal.com profile] drawmelot Zodiac Challenge on LJ, about 13 years ago.

The original drawing was done with pen and watercolour pencils. Although I was happy with the overall concept and details of the piece, at that time I wasn't able to capture Gwen's specific likeness, and have always wanted to take another shot at it.

The redraw is a quick digital sketch done on Adobe Fresco. I found the original photo reference, and worked from that to try to get Gwen's features right. I'm still learning how to blend with the digital watercolour brush, and the shading on her face needs more work. But in terms of the sketch itself, I can definitely see an improvement in my portrait drawing skills. Although not a perfect likeness, she's waaay more recognisable now, so I'm satisfied with the overall result. :)

Title: Timed Figure Drawing Practice 1
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Content Notes: Created for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #64: No Erase. Thanks to [personal profile] yhlee for the nudge that helped me finally sit down to get some drawing practice done tonight. :)

These are digital drawings based on a timed series of poses, from this Youtube video. Having a clock ticking down, and not being able to undo or erase, made this quite an interesting challenge. I'm just pleased that they came out somewhat recognisably human. :b

Title: Gesture Drawing #2: Naatu
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Content Notes: This is my second entry for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #63: Let's Move. Digital drawing of another performer from that night, this time one of the guys dancing. This was a sharper, stompier, less flowy dance. So my approach for this piece was to start with sketchy gesture lines, but then to focus more on lighting and the pull of the fabric to bring the feel of movement. :)

Title: Connected

Fandom: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Character: Nyota Uhura
Content Notes: This is my second entry for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #62: Zentangle: From the Heart. Another digital drawing using Adobe Fresco, this time using the pencil tool.

I absolutely love Uhura! Celia Rose Gooding's performance of "Keep Us Connected", my favourite song from the musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, directly inspired this piece. <333

Content Notes: Created for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #62: Zentangle: From the Heart. Digital drawing using Adobe Fresco.

I started by doodling some of my day-to-day little joys - creating art, taking photos, baking, ticking stuff off my checklist, rainbows, breezy blue skies, green growing things - and then weaved repeating patterns through them. :)

Kicking off Drawtober 2023 with some Star Wars! :D :D

Title: Day 1 - Star (Travelers)
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Fandom: Star Wars
Character: Purrgil
Content Notes: Created for Day 1 of the Drawtober 2023 challenge at [community profile] drawesome. Prompt: Star. This is a digital drawing, done in black and white, with colour tints added. Inspired by Star Wars' space whales. :D

Over the past months, I've gotten pretty comfortable using the pencil tool for digital drawing, especially for shading. So for October, I'm switching things up and challenging myself to practice using the ink brush instead.

Title: Artist Fatemeh
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Content Notes: This is my second piece created for [community profile] drawesome Challenge #57 - Disability Diversity. It is a watercolour portrait of sorts, directly inspired by Iranian artist Fatemeh Hammami Nasrabadi.

[instagram.com profile] fatemehamami creates wonderful coloured pencil artworks, using her foot as her body is 85% paralysed. Her art skills are pretty cool, and you can see some of her art process through her videos on Instagram. I think my favourite piece is the polar bears at #1 in this article. I tried to capture a bit of the bright spirit and passion that shines through her eyes and can be felt in her artworks. ^__^

Yay, reveals! \o/ Here's the artwork I made for the Candy Hearts Exchange:

Title: Shadow and Light
Artist: [archiveofourown.org profile] goss
Rating: General
Fandom: DC Comics
Characters: Clark Kent & Bruce Wayne
Content Notes:
Created for the [personal profile] candyheartsex Exchange. For [archiveofourown.org profile] El_Wayne, who requested Clark Kent & Bruce Wayne friendship. This is a digital painting, using the watercolour tool in Adobe Fresco.

I came across this stock photo, and the concept immediately coalesced in my mind. I love these characters so much, and really enjoyed the challenge of trying to portray the contrast between these superheroes and their public personas, using only basic outlines and body language.

Entire Artwork can be found at AO3:

This was a very deliberate piece, filled with symbolism in the lighting choices, the architecture on either side, the particular stance of the figures, and the positioning of their shadows. I kept it very restrained, using a monochromatic palette, and held back on overworking the piece. (I'd been watching a lot of Chinese brush painting tutorials around the time I made this, and I think it definitely impacted how it turned out.)

It's been an absolute joy reading the comments, and seeing what people take away from it. ^__^

It's Dimanche Gras today! The Kings and Queens of Carnival will be crowned tonight. They are kind of like the mascots of the Carnival bands, and their costumes are large and ostentatious, and always so creative. I thought it would be cool to perhaps draw one for this month's [community profile] drawesome challenge.

But while searching for reference pics, I stumbled upon a completely unrelated, but utterly amazing photo, and it inspired the artwork below. The photo shows a local member of the Orisha (or Shango) faith taking part in the Oshun River Festival. In the photo, they have made offerings and are paying homage to Oshun, the river deity.
