The word Hispano It is important to define the word hispano, especially since it is the source of controversey in some cultures (namely, the United States). Hispano is the Spanish word used to describe somebody or something from Hispania, which is the word the Romans used to describe what is now known as the Iberian peninsula. The word was further extended to refer to anything related to the peninsula. Thousands of years later, the word hispano has come to signify that which is related to the cultures of Hispania including the colonies that Iberia played a crucial role of influence.
Hispano, thus, has no derogatory significance. It is simply a definition of anybody or anything from Spain, Latin America, and the parts of Africa and Asia that carry Iberian influence. This definition does not in any way discount other influences that make up hispanos including those that derrive from Native Americans (Toltecs, Incans, Aztecs, Mayans, etc.), modern North American culture, European culture, Asian culture, etc.
Each hispano is made up of a varying degree of these influences and the purpose of this community is to celebrate and discuss the broad and complex picture that is the hispanic world.
