| Visiting the US from Canda by car |

A friend of mine is planing to visit the US from Canada in a couple of weeks (For just one night). His passport is expired, but looking through the various sites, it sounds like this shouldn't be a problem.
"Canadians can continue to use such documents as their birth certificates and drivers’ licences to cross the Canada-U.S. border by land and sea until the WHTI is fully implemented."
(From http://www.voyage.gc.ca/main/sos/ci/cur-en.asp?txt_ID=852 )
Does anyone have firsthand experience with doing this? It's all very well having a website which says it's ok, but it would be useful to hear that a drivers license/birth certificate has been succesfully used.
Thanks!
