Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (ひぐらしのなく頃に), or "When the Cicadas Cry", is a Visual Novel made by the Group 07th Expansion, using the NScripter Engine. After the first game, Onikakushi-hen (or, literally, "Spirited Away by the Demon Chapter") was released on August 10, 2002, it became a runaway hit, releasing subsequent sequels not only on the PC, but also on the PS2, and Nintendo DS. Manga and anime adaptations were also created, based on the original series, "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni" （ひぐらしのなく頃に; or "When the Cicadas Cry") and "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai" （ひぐらしのなく頃に解; or "When the Cicadas Cry Solutions"). Both anime were quite popular, and have a fanbase in both English and Japanese-speaking circles.
Though the anime and Manga series are going to be released in English, as of now the games are not.
So why am I posting in my translation community about this? Because I am going to translate all the games, bit by bit, starting with Onikakushi-hen and ending with Matsuribayashi-hen. It might take me some time, but I'll get there.
This translation will also seem a bit weird on paper, as it is based on a visual novel, which has a slightly different writing rhythm than a novel.
But I hope that you join me on this long journey through...Higurashi. The first installment of the translation should be up soon! So long as I find my original translation notebook for the translator's notes... |
