The Never Story is the debut studio album by JID, released by Dreamville, Spillage Village, and Interscope Records on March 10, 2017. It was supported by the four singles "Never," "D/vision," "Hereditary," and "EdEddnEddy". In its first week, the album peaked at number 197 on the US Billboard 200 and was met with warm critical reception. It contains guest appearances from EarthGang, Mereba, and 6lack, and production by Sean McVerry, OZ the Additive, Childish Major, Christo, and J. Cole, among others.
The Never Story was reissued for vinyl in December 2022, featuring the two variants LP and Expanded Edition 2LP, as well as instrumental tracks.[1]
Background[]
On February 20, 2017, it was announced of JID signing with Dreamville Records, joint by the release of the "Never" music video to his YouTube channel. A two-minute promotional video for his forthcoming first full-length record under the label, The Never Story, also dropped. In the visual, he talks about the meaning behind his Pontiac, where it was with him "through every phase of his life," then concludes with him and J. Cole driving through the streets.[2] Two notable songs are "Lauder," named to be his favorite track, and "Hereditary," which is narrated from the perspective of a woman.[3]
In promotion, he was a support act for Jazz Cartier's Secret Garden Tour, J. Cole's world tour 4 Your Eyez Only, and alongside EarthGang embarked on the Never Had Shit Tour.
In the album's one-year anniversary, JID reported over socials of a vinyl release limited to 1,500 copies on his website.[4]
