I'm looking for some recommendations for mics that can be used with a Mac for voice recording instead of using the built in mic.

I'm looking for decent voice quality, but don't need professional quality. End recordings will be posted online in .mp3 and .ogg formats.

Nothing too expensive, maybe under $40?

USB, audio jack plug-in or some other?

Also open to mics with headphones, like for Skype, as long as it can be used for voice recording.

Running OSX on an Intel Mac.

I've Googled this problem, but I've only found other people with the same problem and no solutions.

I just came down to my hometown from Austin for Christmas. I booted up my iPod Touch to use some location-based apps. At first it picked up my current location, but after a short while, it reset itself to Austin.

The iPod was set up here at my house in my hometown using our house's WiFi. I went back to my apartment in Austin using my WiFi there and all was well. For Christmas, I brought my wireless router from my apartment and hooked it up to the house's wireless router (for good reason*).

I'm guessing I started having problems when I hooked up the apartment wireless router. I've told the iPod Touch to forget that network and only use the house's signal and have restarted it with those settings and it still thinks I'm in Austin. I've tried restarting the iPod Touch and turning off and on the location settings.

I don't plan to restore my iPod and I don't plan to disconnect my router.

*Another problem I have is that my MBP runs really slowly using the house's WiFi, which is why I brought my wireless router from my apartment.

I was hoping maybe some of you might be able to help me with this.
So, I have an IPOD classic 160GB Video (http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html)

I also have a very basic and old CD/Stereo system in my crappy car. Very regrettably the stereo does not have an auxiliary plug. Up until this point I've been using a very crappy iPod Car Stereo FM Transmitter. I had trouble with it from day one, tons of fuzziness in the background, hard to program, LCD display crapped out on me about 4 months ago. I give up with it! Note: If you're curious, This is the one I had that was awful.

Now, I am assuming my only option is to use another FM transmitter, correct? Are there any other options out there for me?

If an FM transmitter is my only option, can anyone suggest a good one? I'd rather pay more than I did last time to get a good one because that one was a major pain in my butt from day one.

Thanks

Hello again.

I just set up my macbook, creating the admin user at setup of OS X 10.6. I then used the migration assistant to import the equivalent user from my powerbook G4.

I assumed that the user I created when I set this macbook would have access to everything. However, it's telling me that permission is denied when I attempt to access files and folders on the user that I imported from my powerbook. In that user, the same applies with the user that I created with the macbook.

This seems strange; I had assumed that a user with admin privileges could access anything whatsoever. Is there a way that I can change this?

Hi.

EDIT: I left it, and ten minutes later, it decided to let me insert the disk after all.

I am presently trying to install Mac OS X 10.6 from the installation DVD onto a white plastic macbook from 2007 with a blank hard drive which was installed today, and apparently made ready for the OS to be installed.

However, when I try to insert the disk into the slot load drive, it won't acknowledge it and start sucking it in as normal. I can push it all the way in, to just where I can still grasp the disk, at which point I feel a sensation of something like a spring which resists the disk going any further.

Any idea how to persuade it to let me insert the disk?

Another question from me now that I've decided on going with a desktop.

So if I get my iMac through the Apple store, I get a 10% education discount. My dad has mentioned the possibility of getting one through Best Buy because we could get a 20% discount.

What are the advantages of getting one at the Apple store versus Best Buy? I've only ever gotten my Apple products through the Apple store (save for my iPhone via an AT&T store).

My main concern I guess is if something happens to the computer, if I didn't get it at the Apple store, can I still take it to the Apple store for help? Can I still get Apple Care if I go through Best Buy? I know those may seem like stupid questions, but I just want to make sure before I go spend a bunch of money on a new computer and something happens to it later down the road.

I bought an iPod touch (2nd gen 8gb, brand new) at the end of January, and last night I noticed that it was going round a cycle where it would flash white, display the Apple logo and ignore any input. I wasn't using it at the time - it started doing that on its own. iTunes would only see it sporadically, and when it did see it, it didn't recognise it as my normal iPod, telling me it needed to be restored to factory settings. I restored it to factory settings and then from a backup, and while that looked like it was successful and the iPod was charging properly, it still wouldn't behave properly. I could get the "slide to power off" and "slide to unlock" screens, but it wouldn't recognise me sliding anything and so wouldn't unlock or shutdown.

At that point, I went to bed, and today it won't respond at all. The screen's completely black, no flashing logos or anything. iTunes can't see it, holding the home and off buttons together for up to 60 seconds gets no response, and it doesn't appear to charge from either the computer or a mains adaptor.

Are there any troubleshooting options open to me at this point (bearing in mind iTunes can't see it, so I'm not sure I could force another factory reset) or is my only option to take it to a store? Will there be anything much they can do?

xposted, apologies if you see this more than once!

I'm thinking of buying a new Mac within the next year, but I'm not sure if I should go with a desktop (iMac) or laptop (MacBook).

Currently I have a PowerBook G4 that I bought back in December of 2004. This was my first Mac, and I've loved everything about it. It still runs okay, though the battery is starting to not last as long, and it is starting to run a bit slower (especially when a webpage has gifs or I'm streaming a video), but I feel like it's still got quite a bit of use I can get out of it. It's the only computer I have at home (I use a PC at work).

Would it be better to go with the iMac and just use my PowerBook when I'm in need of a laptop, or should I go with the MacBook since I'm so used to a laptop? Also, would you recommend the 21.5" or the 27" if I went with the iMac? I'm so used to a 12" screen at home and a 15" at work that either seems excessively big to me.

Thanks!
So currently I have the Sony STR-K700 (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-IcolGczq1yX/p_158HTDW700/Sony-HT-DDW700.html?tab=detailed_info) for my audio system for my Mac, Blu-ray player, and Digital Cable.

After doing some looking around on cnet, google, endgadet, etc. I've basically narrowed my choice to one, but I'd like some actual feedback instead of reading a static review which the reviewer wont reply to since the system doesn't actually alert them when a comment is made.

The system I'm looking at is the Onkyo S5300.

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=HT-S5300&class=Systems&p=s

The things I like about this off the bat

1) two optical digital inputs
2) HDMI inputs
3) Current/future formats
4) Correct my if I'm wrong, but the Onkyo system is much better than the Sony
5) From my general poking around it seems Onkyo has a better reputation for HTIB's than Sony in general

Currently I have my Mac, blu-ray, and cable box hooked into a two toslink switches so I can connect them to the receiver I have, likewise for the HDMI connections to a HDMI switch. I realize the with the Onkyo I would not need the second digital optical input since it'd take A/V over HDMI, which would free up some space and outlets.

Anyway long story short, has anyone used the Onkyo S5300, or really anything from the S3300 up, and were you happy with it?

And am I right when I state the Onkyo S5300 would be an improvement over the Sony STR-K700?
