11:24AM - invitation
Emily here, with the announcement that Michael Badnarik's official campaign Journal Community,
badnarik_in_dc, is now up. I'm sure everyone here remembers that he was our presidential candidate in 2004; now he's set his sights on a congressional seat in 2006. Though the district is in Texas, we've received a wide range of national support and I already have volunteers from many states.
If you'd like to help, or if you'd just like to be kept informed of campaign news and events, please come and join. All are welcome.

10:06PM - Third Parties
My apologies if you've already read this or simply don't care, I'm posting it most of the communities that listed 'third parties' as an interest and a few others as well.
I've created a community called
us_thirdparties. It is a community for people interested in 'third' party politics in the United States. A place to ask questions and get answers about specific third parties or just the third party movement. Anyone of any political persuasion is invited to join and contribute and hopefully we can build a community with diverse political views. The ultimate goal of this community is to spread awareness of the third party movement and hopefully garner new support for the inclusion of these 'alternative' parties in American politics, so please lets try and avoid pointless bickering over individual policies. Keep in mind that legitimacy for one 'third' party is legitimacy for all 'third' parties.
(For the time being this community will be only lightly moderated, if at all, but I will crack down if people can't be civil. Hopefully we can all get along well enough to work towards our common and worthy goal: freedom of choice in politics.)

2004 LPNH State Convention - October 2
Red Blazer Restaurant in Concord
An exciting day of speakers, workshops, vendors, information, networking, and more! At the Red Blazer Restaurant on Saturday, October 2.
Our lunch speaker will be the Chairman of the State Board of Education, Fred Bramante. Our dinner keynote speaker will be long-time Libertarian author, speaker, activist, and candiadte Dr. Mary Ruwart of Texas.
Mr. Bramante is bringing a new debate to education in New Hampshire. The state board is in the process of revising the minimum education standards and is considering several changes. Bramante has said "education must not be limited to the classroom but should involve doing and finding what really interests you." We look forward to hearing his remarks.
Dr. Ruwart is best known for her books, Healing Our World, and Short Answers to Tough Questions, the former of which won the Freedom Book of the Year award for 2003 and was hailed by Visions Magazine as "what may be the most important book of the decade."
Our afternoon program will include a presentation on privacy and RFID technology by Katherine Albrecht of SpyChips.org, speeches by our candidates for office, our business meeting, officer elections, and more!
Due to a huge turnout last year, we are asking everyone to please pre-register to ensure they will have a place. We've reserved a large room, but cannot guarantee availability at the door.

2:59PM - ***EXTREMELY IMPORTANT***
For those of you unaware of the nature of some of the anti-gay marriage protestors that will be showing up at the happy events about to occur, let me point you to this website so you may prepare yourselves for the extreme nature of some of the opponents to gay marriage:
http://www.godhatesfags.com
This is the website of the Westboro Baptist Church, an extreme Baptist church based out of Topeka, KS. led by Rev. Fred Phelps. They travel around the country in their crusade against gays.
link to their general protest schedule:
http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/pickets.html
link to PDF flyer about Cambridge, MA-specific protest:
http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/may2004/Cambridge_5-4-2004.pdf
I am confident that they (and, sadly, their small children) will be carrying the highly offensive signs shown in the flyer and other similarly offensive signs. Some of their signs in the past have included phrases like "Thank God for Spet. 11", "Hail Mary" (with one man bending another man over, mimicking a sexual position), and other such nonsense. Their signs are usually too graphic to show on the news, so I wanted to spread the word here.
People in the past have organized pledge drives where people pledge a certain amount of money for each minute that these people preach. So, for every minute they preach, more money is raised for gay rights.
<b>Please go to their website so you can be an informed citizen when their vitriolic, systemic march of hatred arrives in the first state in the nation to legalize gay marriage.</b>
Spread this post as wide as as far as you can.

Hi! I've just joined this, but have been looking for ways to volunteer my time for the MA Libertarian Party. Unfortunately, I haven't received much thus far, other than requests for donations. : ( I've also just started a brand new community on LJ,
apathy_kills_. I was inspired by the fact that the vocal minority are effectively dictating the way that the majority lives and that's due in large part to apathy. Check it out and please consider joining. I look forward to meeting all of you.

7:50PM - Ashcroft in Boston next week
Dear New England Freedom Fighters,
As you may know, Attorney General John Ashcroft is on a month-long tour of the country defending the Patriot Act. His appearances are open only to invited guests; his audiences consist of local, state, and federal law enforcement, and people from the local U.S. Attorney's office. Department of Justice has released details of Ashcroft's Northeast stops. Mark your calendars and get your signs ready--Ashcroft will be in Buffalo, New York and New Castle, New Hampshire this Monday, September 8; and Boston and New York this Tuesday, September 9. These events, funded by tax payer dollars, will be closed to the public.
New Castle, New Hampshire Details:
Who: You
What: Ashcroft speaking to law enforcement personnel in a closed-door meeting
Where: Wentworth Ballroom A, B, C (main level), Wentworth by the Sea, 588 Wentworth Road, New Castle
When: Monday, September 8, 1-1:15 pm. Ashcroft speaks at 2:15 pm, but the media arrives at 1 pm.
Why: Protest to protect your rights and freedoms
Boston Details:
Who: You
What: Ashcroft speaking to law enforcement personnel in a closed-door meeting
Where: Faneuil Hall, Boston
When: Tuesday, September 9. Gather between 8:00-8:15 am--Ashcroft
speaks at 9:20, but the media arrives at 8:05.
Why: Protest to protect your rights and freedoms
Even though the Justice Department has been tight-lipped about Ashcroft's itinerary, he has met protesters at every stop. The media has been very generous with coverage of the protests. In many cases, the protesters get at least as much coverage as Ashcroft himself, and in many cases, more. Wouldn't it be great if we countered Ashcroft's closed door meetings in New Hampshire and Boston with thousands of people demanding open government and democracy, and answers to our concerns about infractions on our freedoms?
For more information, updates, and coverage of local protests, see our Ashcroft tour page, http://www.bordc.org/Ontheroad.htm and see the Department of Justice's press release at http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/2003/September/03_ag_487.htm for Ashcroft's itinerary.
Please forward this information to anyone you think might be interested.
We'll send out more information when we get it.
Thanks for all your work!
Sincerely,
Vanessa Bliss, Organizer

just dropping a quick note to let y'all know that this community's new maintainer is alexp.
3:44AM - up for grabs...
(crossposted to
building_19,
jfash_in_ne,
magsa, and
southofboston, so sorry if you've gotta see this on your friends page more than once :})
well, since I'll be going off to college in Georgia soon, it would be silly of me to think that I could keep in touch with communities with an, um, "local" interest such as this one. it has become quite evident that I won't be able to continue to moderate this many communities on LiveJournal with a clear conscience, and I'd feel better if someone else took the responsibility of taking over some of my communities.
please e-mail me if you're interested, and include the password you'd like to use for logging in. only do so if you're seriously interested, because I wouldn't want these communities to, er, fall into the wrong hands. thanks and g'night.
