| 1. Still thinking about the last few five things to know about certain characters. It's surprisingly hard for some! 2. Working on a PBAM prompt that refuses to actually go to the P part of it, a fact I have now complained about in three separate chat channels, on Tumblr, and on the DW/LJ world. 3. Took the 8th off SRS BSNS social media. I included FB on that, not because I use it for a lot of SRS BSNS, but because other people do and the temptation to respond defeats the purpose of my personal version of a strike, seeing as I don't have a job to not go to and all. 4. No, seriously: it refuses to go to the P part yet. It's like slow burn in short form, given the degree of sexual--tension's not the right word here, but it's close. The interactions between them are highly sexualized in a power play sort of way, basically. 5. On that note, I think I need to crack open some sapphic erotica and go curl up in my bed for a while as I think through this story. If I can find where I put it. It's all probably too wholesome, frankly, and I'd probably be better off looking into the happy fun world of 19th century filth. 6. Before I do that, though, time to put on the ring and perfume from the USSR. Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/821238.html. | No, seriously. I mean, I am on Twitter all the damn time, but that means I am connecting with a dozen fans and a lot of politics. What's up with me: I cosplayed all four days of ECCC, three MCU and one Doctor Who (the latter my only new one of the year) and now my feet are filled with rage. I went to a whopping one panel--weren't a lot that I wanted to attend, sadly. The MCU meet up was dude-heavy and filled with Deadpools, though I did meet a teen kiddo who admired the Fourth Doctor scarf I was knitting and who shared my affection for the Seventh Doctor, though he was too young to like Happiness Patrol, sadly. It doesn't really work if you aren't Thatcher-familiar, I guess. Saw Logan. Was awesome. Before the con, saw Get Out. Also awesome. Watched all of Timeless. Less awesome, but Rufus! Unemployed still and unproductive fannishly. Outside of knitting the damn scarf, which I hadn't touched in 2.5 years and am almost to the halfway mark on now. I am filled with meh, have graduated therapy (well, kinda), and I suspect I am having some post-convention malaise. But I am also feeling disconnected in general. Not getting out enough or seeing enough people. Lack of funds, lack of time, parenting stuff, and when I feel disconnected, I tend to drop out of life even more because I lose social skills fast. Whee? (Every single time I say something online and it goes into the void because I am saying it at stupid o'clock, it provides food for the brain raccoons, too. Ahahaha.) I miss conversation. Basically. Also, I have comments to reply to and now that I know there is a new series of Broadchurch, I know why, so yay? Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/820673.html. | I am trying to funnel all my political talk to Twitter these days, so I have been basically lurking everywhere else. Tumblr, more than usual, is annoying me: it's Twitter on a time delay with no context and things deleted for incorrect info stay up there and the circular firing squad is worse and I have so much blacklisted or blocked via xkit that it barely loads. So. Trying to motivate to talk elsewhere. Other than occasionally in Yuletide IRC, that is. Which is to say... What's up? Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/820273.html. | Well, the number and type of private bookmarks I have are certainly... telling, to say the least. (The FF rec was a private bookmark I decided to take public. Let's just say that those bookmarks are the sound that comes after the doves stop crying and are shoved in a bag in the fridge.) ::facepalm:: Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/818803.html. | Skipping Day 4, as I left a comment on a stranger's journal already. Fandom Snowflake 2017 Master PostDay 5In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Well, this is going to be... assorted. And I do mean that. I am linking to stories from my AO3 bookmarks not written by friends or regular IRC chatmates (the latter of which eliminates the bulk of my HTP recs) and (I think) not recced here before. | Leading with the stuff: I volunteered to write a deployment guide for someone and OMG, I am now a bucket of "I WILL FIND AN ALIBI AND QUICKLIME IF YOU DON'T JUST ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTIONS I'M ASKING. I DO NOT NEED TO KNOW EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE VARIABLE RIGHT NOW." which is a difficult bucket when the person in question is your spouse. I have a tension headache from trying to do this in a very compressed timeframe so I have a writing sample I can actually use that's not lost to NDAs and internal documentation. MEME! Grab the nearest book, flip to page 117, the second sentence is your life in 2017.My desk is next to a bookshelf so determining closest was difficult and I went with "easiest to grab" as my tiebreaker. "And the writer is willing to spill everything."Seems legit. Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/818270.html. Should it tickle your fancy, you can comment there using OpenID. | For the Fandom Snowflake Challenge 2017Day 2 In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soulAustin City Limits #1411: Leonard Cohen. Dad and I happened to be watching Austin City Limits on PBS the night this first aired, something we only occasionally did. I was a freshman in high school (Grade 9) and I was transfixed. It was like finally seeing the point of music after thinking I got it. Hell, it was like finally seeing the point of language. (It's funny: I'm usually fairly articulate, but I entirely lose my ability to word when I'm talking Leonard Cohen. No words seem right enough to describe his music and impact.) It pales in comparison to having seen him perform live and in person, which I was fortunate enough to do twice during the Grand Tour, but if it weren't for catching this episode of Austin City Limits almost 28 years ago, I wouldn't have known to make that pilgrimage. | Have decided to, for the second year in a row, do the Snowflake Challenge. (Note: I will be doing the image-free linkback on all entries.) I figure, me having been semi-silent for months and comment-neglectful, it's a kick in the rear to actually post daily for a bit and get back in the habit. Also, excellent procrastination technique! Day 1: Self RecsI feel like I should just link back to last year's post. It was very thorough. But I also feel like that would be cheating. So, hey! This year, let's do POV varieties! One first, one second, one third. Apologies for the lack of any gen. Body Shots (2502 words) by Minim CalibreChapters: 1/1 Fandom: Angel: the SeriesRating: Mature Relationships: Winifred Burkle/Faith Lehane ( Why I recommend it!Collapse )Screenwriter's Blues (1150 words) by Minim CalibreChapters: 1/1 Fandom: Harold and Kumar go to White CastleRating: Explicit Relationships: Neil Patrick Harris/Harold's Car ( Why I recommend it!Collapse )There Was, There Wasn't (13521 words) by Minim CalibreChapters: 1/1 Fandom: Captain America (Movies), Marvel Cinematic UniverseRating: Explicit Relationships: Steve Rogers/Natasha Romanov ( Why I recommend it!Collapse )So that's it, that's my three! | So, on the heels of a Yuletide where I wrote a lot of words between two completed stories, I am diving back into the Push WIP, which I set aside in frustration last March and have only poked at occasionally in a desultory fashion since. At some point, as part of the initial restructure effort (I decided to remove one subplot, change where critical developments took place, and some other stuff), I actually tore a few sections out and threw them into their own Scrivener projects, so I actually have no fucking clue how long this thing is. Over 90k. That part's important. ( I AM GOING TO REGRET MY LIFE CHOICES.Collapse )Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/817246.html. | You Might Think I'm Crazy (32363 words) by Minim CalibreChapters: 5/5 Fandom: What's Your Number? (2011)Rating: Mature Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Ally Darling/Colin Shea Characters: Ally Darling, Colin Shea, Daisy Darling, Ava Darling Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Family Dynamics, Love, Bad Relationship Habits, Canon-Typical Sexual Content, Romance, Holidays, Canonical Terms For Genitalia, Actually Ever After Summary: "Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction." - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry "Any way you want it/That's the way you need it" - Journey From Dear Author letter: "I really want Colin and Ally to be happy--I feel like Ally especially deserves to be happy, to be treated like a queen, and Colin is just the guy to do it. But that said, the road doesn't have to be smooth if you have something you'd like to explore with them, there are so many places you can go with exploring this. (You can kind of see what I like about them in the fic I wrote for this fandom last Yuletide, or in the other stories written last year as well.)"( Full details from the request signupCollapse )So, hey! Who has two thumbs and wrote the third-longest story in the collection? OH YEAH, THIS SQUIRREL! You may ask, how the hell did the Slowest Writer in the World bang out 32k in time for Yuletide? You may ask, who the fuck has 32k of story in them for What's Your Number?? You may ask a lot of perfectly reasonable questions about this, most of which are gonna boil down to what-the-actual-fuck??? I cannot promise that any of these questions are going to be answered below the next cut. Or any subsequent cuts. Despite this being over 3k of reveal post. ( Buckle up. This is going to get long.Collapse )If you're not interested in story tl;dr, but are interested in things like musical musings and the perfume choices made, I'm putting that below a separate cut. ( Notes, musical and base.Collapse )And now to wrap it up! ( Random comments about thingsCollapse )If you managed to read the whole thing (honestly, either this or the story itself), I salute you. Y'know, I suppose I could have just summed it up as " gwyn is awesome, I really like and overthink this movie, and damn, that's a lot of words." I mean, seriously. Speaking of summaries, the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry quote was intended as a placeholder, as my usual method of quoting something from the story wasn't working for me. Then I decided that it would be hilarious to pair it with some sort of utterly unpretentious song lyric, which took longer than expected (why I didn't just START with Journey is beyond me), and actually, this says as much about my process as anything. (Also, I think it totally works as a summary for the damn thing.) Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/816831.html. Should it tickle your fancy, you can comment there using OpenID. | You're Gonna See, It's Our Destiny (1534 words) by Minim CalibreChapters: 1/1 Fandom: Android "Rock Paper Scissors" CommercialRating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Characters: Rock (character), Paper (character), Scissors (character) Additional Tags: Friendship, Bullying, Friends to the Rescue Summary: "You know in some way you're a lot like me/You're just a prisoner and you're tryin' to break free" From Dear Author letter: "I don't have much to add to the Details but in general, what I love about this commercial is how charming and goofy it is and I'd love to see that in fic."( full details from the request signupCollapse )Written after the assignment, because I thought this was a fandom gwyn really wanted and also because holy shitballs, I wrote something fucking long for the main assignment and thought I needed a backup plan, I don't have a lot to say about writing this expect that I dashed it off in the writer's version of a motherfucking sugar high, complete with WHEE!!!, during a series of word wars in the Yuletide IRC channel, so thank god she liked it. And she did! Apparently. Do you know how hard it is to keep a straight face while someone is telling people about their gift you wrote and you are sitting RIGHT NEXT TO THEM? Neither did I! But now I do! Sorry about the mac & cheese? :D The closest thing I had to A Plan about this was "some sort of superhero origin story?" and then it became sort of that, but mostly an exercise in me going hog wild with the puns. I am not kidding about the earworm mentioned in the author's note, by the way. I did a lot of canon review in the two or three hours of word wars, so "Man in Motion" was stuck in my head that whole day. Which isn't bad. I mean, it's the only time in the last month that it hasn't been The Cars or related. So, hey! And I'm going to go more fully into that other one in the next installment of Min Overthinks the Universe. Crossposted from http://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/816384.html. | [Yuletide] Pay no attention to the Min behind the curtain... (REVEALS!) So I wrote two things this Yuletide for the main collection, as I did last year. Unlike last year, they were both for the same recipient, gwyn. You know, this isn't the first time I've been assigned a friend. I was assigned a friend my very first Yuletide, ten years ago! (And my second, actually. It was smaller back then.) It is the first time I've been assigned someone who knows where I live. (Look, I apparently accidentally gamed the system by offering a five minute fandom she'd requested because it looked cute and I needed another thing to offer on my sign ups, okay?) Issues discovered on receiving assignment- Sudden need to be Extra Sneaky with someone I usually text with about Fic Anxiety, Yuletide, and Fandom.
- Local write-ins become an exercise in making sure nothing you're doing is at all visible.
- OMG, PRESSURE! PRESSURE! PRESSURE!
- Cannot suggest we watch assignment chosen source when hanging out, though it would have been a good choice.
Texts sent about this situation include! Also, I got a good friend as my recipient. Eep. Ack. OMG. Though I knew this to be possible, we have been texting about Yuletide a lot and I can't talk about my recip now to her!!!Guys, you should help me decide on a fake Yuletide fandom I can complain about to my actual recipient! ... I am thinking something she's not into so I don't have to add too much detail to my lie.(this was before a party we were both going to be at) I’m also totally overplanning because I got Gwyn and I want to make her Yuletide bright and happyThis is going to get... long, so I'm breaking reveals up into three posts this year.
